The inception of The Lounge in 2019 stemmed from the founder's desire to address the gaps in support for youth in low-income neighborhoods. With a background rooted in these communities, the founder, who faced numerous challenges as a child, understood the urgent need for consistent mentorship and safe environments. The organization began its journey by working with a small group of youth from a local recreation center, focusing on providing them with the support and resources they needed during stressful school years.

As the pandemic hit, The Lounge quickly adapted by offering virtual mentorship sessions, ensuring continued engagement with the youth despite social distancing measures. This proactive approach allowed them to maintain connections with the youth and provide much-needed guidance and support during a challenging time.

In the fall of 2021, The Lounge established a partnership with Environmental Learning for Kids (ELK), which facilitated greater access to students and expanded service opportunities. The organization gradually increased its reach, entering schools and community centers across several districts, including Denver, Aurora, and Adams County. By fall 2022, The Lounge was serving approximately 75 disadvantaged youth, and expansion plans continued to grow, facilitated by requests from local schools.

The mission of The Lounge is deeply influenced by the founder's own childhood experiences. Growing up in a low-income household with limited resources, the founder often found it difficult to find safe spaces to relax and socialize. This personal history fuels the commitment to ensure that no child experiences the same hardships without support.

At Auraria Campus, the founder's academic journey led to a passion for psychology and rehabilitation, further solidifying the vision of a mentorship program that provides a safe space for youth. The Lounge seeks to empower youth not only academically but also socially and financially, fostering a supportive community where every mentee can thrive.

As operations continue to expand, The Lounge is set to redesign newly acquired office spaces into all-purpose safe zones for youth, aiming to impact even more lives in the community. The organization is dedicated to being that supportive village for young people, offering them the foundation they need to succeed and the reassurance that they can always count on a helping hand.

Background Statement

The Lounge is a community organization in central Denver dedicated to empowering disadvantaged youth aged 10 to 24 through targeted mentorship programs and tailored curricula. Founded in 2019, The Lounge was inspired by the founder’s own experiences in a single-parent household, highlighting the necessity for safe spaces and consistent support for young people.

At the core of The Lounge's mission is the "Making Success Attractive" mentorship program, which focuses on providing structured guidance to help youth navigate academic and personal challenges. This curriculum emphasizes skill development, self-confidence, and resilience, ensuring participants have the tools they need to succeed. These programs include academic tutoring, life skills workshops, and recreational activities designed to foster teamwork and social connections.
