Dear Friends of The Liberty School,
As we approach Thanksgiving, we find ourselves reflecting on the many things we’re grateful for—and at the top of that list is you. Your support, encouragement, and belief in our mission make it possible for our students to grow, thrive, and discover what they’re capable of.
This year carries special meaning for me personally. After eleven years as Head of School, I will be completing my final year in this role. It has been an honor to lead The Liberty School and to witness, every day, the growth, resilience, and transformation of our students. I am excited to hand the reins to someone who will help Liberty continue to grow and evolve to reach its fullest potential, and I’m equally excited to return my full attention to teaching, the work that first brought me into education.
Under the careful guidance of our Board, we have formed a new Head of School task force and search committee made up of parents, staff, Board members, a community member, and an alumni student and parent. Outlined and planned in great detail, the process is underway as we aim to identify outstanding potential leaders to help Liberty continue to develop.
With the support of our current administrative team, and with all of Liberty’s stakeholders invested, we are confident we can make this important transition smoothly. Helping during this important time will be three new members of the Board of Trustees: Dr. Abbey Wick, an innovative soil scientist who relocated from North Dakota so her son could attend Liberty; Eric Potter, a local CEO of a successful IT company; and Dr. James A. Bell, a retired orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist who has been a dedicated Liberty volunteer, supporting our students during study hall.
We are also celebrating the successes of the students who have moved through our program. This year, we heard from a recent Liberty alum who reached out to share what he’s been up to. After graduating from high school, he began taking college courses, excelled in advanced math, and even presented his first academic paper at an IEEE conference on AI-based bacteria detection. He went on to complete a 98-page thesis on improving machine-learning training methods and is now beginning his studies at the Colorado School of Mines.
He shared:
“At Liberty, I learned how to persevere through challenges. It allowed me to see myself as someone with potential, and that changed everything.”
And to our teachers and community, he wrote:
“There is no way I can give back more than you gave me, but I hope my story helps you keep going, knowing that you are truly helping your students.”
Stories like his remind us why this work matters—and why your support is so essential. As we look ahead, I hope you’ll join me in supporting Liberty’s next chapter. Your generosity helps us:
If you’re able, please consider making a year-end gift. Every contribution, large or small, directly supports the students, teachers, and mission that define our school.
Thank you—for your trust, your partnership, and your belief in Liberty. I am deeply grateful for these past eleven years, and for Liberty’s bright future still ahead.
With Sincere Gratitude,
Christian Holmen
Head of School
To provide individualized, dynamic education for dyslexic, academically gifted, and twice-exceptional (both dyslexic and gifted) students.
The Liberty School was birthed in 2007, when passionate Durango Mountain Camp parents approached co-founder, Joyce Bilgrave, a nationally recognized expert on dyslexia seeking guidance, reassurance, hope, and a brighter future for their children. Joyce having founded several dyslexia schools and camps across the country agreed to open a school recognizing the need for a full-time, specialized dyslexia curriculum in the Four Corners Region. Thus, The Liberty School was born and Joyce opened its doors to 12 eager students.
From 2007 to 2015, the Liberty School location had transitioned a total of four times and was about to be displaced once again by a new charter school that needed its space. So in the spring of 2016, a permanent home was sought out. Within three years of the vision to acquire an everlasting location, a gorgeous, wooded, 9-acre parcel located on Junction Creek in Durango was donated by a benevolent donor. Then in 2016 through 2018 the daunting feat of raising $1.2 million in donations and acquiring a $1.6 million loan was miraculously accomplished. In August 2018, Liberty opened its newly built campus offering students and staff an inviting and warm facility featuring three classrooms, ten one-on-one tutoring rooms, and a large multi-purpose room for gym and other activities. The newly built campus also features plenty of open space, a stream, and trails that serve as an outdoor classroom where the students can breathe in fresh air, learn, and have fun.
