Join Us in Funding Grants that Save Senior Dogs

The Grey Muzzle Organization is the largest national nonprofit organization focused specifically on senior dog well-being. We fund grants that give senior dogs access to essential care, prevent surrender, and get them adoption-ready and into homes faster.

Partnering with Animal Welfare Organizations to Save More Senior Dogs

Animal welfare organizations are facing growing challenges—rising veterinary costs, limited shelter capacity, and increasing pressure from their communities to help every pet in need.

Grey Muzzle provides grant funding that relieves the financial burden limiting access to essential care. These grants empower organizations to prevent surrenders and prepare senior dogs for adoption through targeted, senior-focused programs that deliver meaningful results. We have provided grants to shelters and rescues in Colorado since 2014. Because of supporters like you, we have helped hundreds of senior dogs from Fort Collins to Pueblo.

Impact By the Numbers

The data below comes directly from our Grantee Outcomes Report, reflecting the reach and results of grant-funded care programs across the country from July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2025. These grants, made possible through donations, were primarily used to expand access to critical care, resulting in improved quality of life for senior dogs—both in shelters and in homes.

  • 5,576 Senior Dogs Received Essential Care Services
  • 4,533 Medical Care Services Were Provided
  • 1,878 Dental Care Services Were Provided
  • 2,345 Surrender Prevention Services Were Provided

Baby Neer, a 10-year-old Chihuahua, came to The Street Dog Coalition alongside her dad, in desperate need of dental care.

Thanks to a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization, Baby Neer received a full wellness exam, dental scaling and polishing, anesthesia, and dental x-rays. With her pain behind her and her smile restored, Baby Neer is now enjoying her golden years by her dad’s side—where she’s been loved her whole life. 💛

Your support through Colorado Gives helps senior dogs like Baby Neer stay healthy, happy, and home with the people who love them. It also helps ensure senior dogs in shelters get the medical and dental care they need to be adoption-ready and find loving homes of their own.

Mission

The Grey Muzzle Organization improves the lives of at-risk senior dogs by providing funding and resources to animal shelters, rescue organizations, sanctuaries, and other non-profit groups nationwide.

Background Statement

We envision a time when every senior dog finds safety, love, and a soft landing.

In 2008, Julie Dudley turned that personal aspiration into the vision statement of The Grey Muzzle Organization. Leaving her corporate career behind, Julie founded Grey Muzzle, and dedicated the next several years of her life to a cause that most Americans were barely aware of: the plight of homeless senior dogs.

The ASPCA reports the adoption rate for senior dogs (defined as seven years or older) is lower than that of all other ages combined and the percentage of senior dogs who leave the shelter alive is just over 50% (ASPCA, 2015).

Our 2026 goals at The Grey Muzzle Organization are to drive the national conversation on senior dog welfare by:

1.) Collecting Data: There is not a national dataset focused on senior dogs—so we’re building it. We’re asking the questions others aren’t: How many senior dogs need help? What keeps them from staying in their homes or being adopted?

By leading the field in senior dog data collection, we’re equipping our grantees—and the broader animal welfare community—to make smarter, more impactful decisions.

2.) Identifying Solutions: There's not a trusted resource to find well-defined programs designed specifically for senior dogs—programs that others can follow, implement, and build upon.

Grey Muzzle is changing that by tracking grantee outcomes and sharing proven models that shelters and rescues can adapt, replicate and scale to save more senior lives faster.

3.) Targeting Pathways Home: There’s a clear need for stronger pathways home for senior dogs. Grey Muzzle is meeting that need by investing in programs that remove barriers, improve outcomes, and prioritize compassion at every stage of a senior dog’s journey.

Whether it’s preventing intake by helping dogs stay in their current homes, removing adoption barriers to reduce length of stay, or funding hospice care at the end of life, we focus on outcomes that prioritize dignity, comfort, and belonging.

We utilize donations to fund grants that will enable us to target our goals and become a disruptor in the animal welfare space for the benefit of senior dogs.
