In 2005, the City of Westminster and the City and County of Broomfield approved an Intergovernmental Agreement to create a foundation for the acquisition, financing, management and maintenance of Metzger Farm. The Broomfield-Westminster Open Space Foundation was thus established by the two governmental entities to oversee the management of the property.
On December 15, 2005, the Foundation approved the agreement with the Metzger family for the purchase of Metzger Farm as community open space. The total purchase price for the 152-acre property and water rights was $11 million. Grants received from Adams County and Great Outdoors Colorado funded approximately $2 million, with the cities sharing in funding the balance.
The property is located in the city of Westminster, at the northeast quadrant of the intersection of Lowell Boulevard and West 120th Avenue, and is bordered by Broomfield on its north and west sides. The site is on the National Historic Registry and includes trails, two ponds, a wildlife viewing deck, fishing dock and farmstead.
Metzger Farm offers the opportunity to significantly enhance open space, wildlife habitat, and regional trail connections through Broomfield and Westminster. The unique farmstead complex also provides additional recreational and educational opportunities related to agricultural, environmental and Colorado history.
