The Bertie Fund

Dementia changes more than memory. It changes families.

When someone develops dementia, families often find themselves navigating changes in behavior, communication, decision-making, finances, and day-to-day care with little preparation or support. By the time help is available, many families are already in crisis.

The Bertie Fund was created to help families act earlier and navigate dementia with greater clarity, confidence, and support. Our work focuses on a gap that is often overlooked: families who may earn too much to qualify for many assistance programs but still struggle with the financial and practical demands of caregiving.

We are building a proactive approach centered on early identification, caregiver preparation and navigation, and targeted financial relief. We also work to strengthen connections among healthcare providers, employers, and community organizations so families can find support earlier.

The Bertie Fund is named for our founder's grandmother, Bertie, whose experience with dementia and her family's journey as caregivers inspired this work. Her story is a reminder that families shouldn't have to navigate dementia alone.

Mission

The Bertie Fund strengthens families’ ability to navigate dementia and sustain care at home through early identification, caregiver preparation, and targeted financial relief.

Background Statement

The Bertie Fund serves dementia caregivers and families navigating cognitive decline. We focus on households that fall into the middle-income gap of caregiving support, families who earn too much to qualify for most public assistance but not enough to absorb the significant financial and emotional costs of long-term dementia care.

We are committed to serving caregivers from communities that have historically experienced inequitable access to dementia diagnosis, care, and support. This includes a particular focus on Black caregivers, whose loved ones are more likely to experience delayed diagnosis and who often face greater financial, healthcare, and caregiving disparities. By addressing these inequities through early detection, caregiver preparation, and targeted financial relief, we aim to help families access support earlier and navigate dementia with greater stability and confidence.
