Background Statement

Our History: From the Peaks of WWII to Today’s 10th Mountain Division

The story of the 10th Mountain Division begins in the high alpine terrain of Colorado during World War II. With support from the National Ski Patrol and the American Alpine Club, the U.S. Army formed a specialized mountain warfare unit composed of the country’s strongest skiers and mountaineers. Training at Camp Hale, Colorado, these soldiers mastered skiing, climbing, cold-weather survival, and technical mountaineering skills that would transform both military operations and the outdoor recreation movement in America.

In 1945, the Division achieved a decisive breakthrough in the Italian Alps, scaling Riva Ridge and Mount Belvedere in a pivotal offensive that shifted the momentum of the war. Returning home, 10th Mountain veterans used their leadership and outdoor expertise to establish and influence more than 60 ski resorts and related outdoor industries across the United States—forever shaping how Americans engage with the mountains.

In the 1950s, veterans founded the 10th Mountain Division War Memorial Foundation and dedicated the Tennessee Pass Memorial in 1959 to honor fallen soldiers. Remaining funds established the organization now known as the 10th Mountain Division Foundation.

The Modern Division: Passing the Torch

The 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) was reactivated in 1985 at Fort Drum, New York, and has since become the most deployed division in the U.S. Army. The unveiling of the Military Mountaineer Statue in 1991 symbolically passed the torch between WWII veterans and today’s soldiers—uniting generations under a shared legacy of service, readiness, and resilience.

Today the Foundation honors all eras of the Division: WWII soldiers, post-war veterans, the 10th Infantry Division (1948–1958), and the modern Light Infantry Division serving at Fort Drum.
