Testimonials

"The experiential education program gave me the skills to navigate an unfamiliar canyon, a foreign city, as well as the endless challenges that accompany being a young person learning to make my way in the world" ~TMS Alumna

"The Mountain School is the brightest part of my life. I feel so happy and so grateful to have the school and to have my children there, to know they are safe, secure, learning and thriving. Every day, they want to go to school and that's great!" ~TMS Parent

"In ways that I can directly relate to their experiences at TMS, both of my boys not only love learning but have huge reserves of respect for themselves and for others. It's a place where my boys have felt safe to be unique and find their own motivations, both academic and extracurricular." ~Alumni Parent

"My favorite part about TMS is the teacher-student relationship. With such small class sizes, the curriculum can be altered and specialized for students of all types by teachers who understand those students' goals and aspirations."~TMS Student

"TMS gave me the confidence to veer away from mainstream conceptions of what I 'should' do, to carve my own path aligned with my personal passions, and provided me with an understanding that I have the power to shape the life I aspire to lead." ~TMS Alumna

Mission

Telluride Mountain School is an innovative learning community where strong academics, enriching experiences, and meaningful relationships develop confident, curious students who passionately contribute to the world.

Background Statement

Initially founded in 1998, Telluride Mountain School has grown from a home school to a fully accredited member of the National Association of Independent Schools. Today the school serves approximately 120 students in pre-K through high school.

The Mountain School was founded with a handful of students and a single teacher working around a kitchen table. Three local families came together at that time to realize a shared vision: an exceptional learning environment that would inspire and ground their children in strong academics, outdoor education, a values-based curriculum, and service-learning. A single instructor-led the school's first students in their studies and explorations, in what was then aptly called "a school without walls."

The Mountain School's preschool and kindergarten program began as a separate school, Telluride Montessori School. This school was founded in 1995 with five preschoolers and two teachers working together in the basement of a church in the Town of Telluride. In 2003, the school expanded to a full-day program in two classrooms.

Recognizing a shared mission and values, Telluride Mountain School officially merged with Telluride Montessori School in 2004. The two schools now work under one 501(c)(3) designation, a single Board of Trustees, and a single administration. Both programs share a common mission and core values, with coordinated guiding principles reflecting the age levels of the children served.
