Summit Rugby provides a stellar opportunity for young men and women in Summit County to strengthen their physical health and mental resilience, work as a team, and develop leadership skills. Summit Rugby places the highest value on good citizenship and support and empathy for others, establishing a positive culture in the lives of young people.

The Summit Rugby program is also motivating students to perform well academically and exposing them to opportunities to gain acceptance and often scholarships to higher education programs that may otherwise be out of reach.

"There are very few activities in life that teach you challenging life lessons while allowing for tremendous growth AND fun. Rugby for me, and for so many of my life-long friends, is that thing. Through Summit Rugby I learned that championships are built through hard work, difficult decisions can be made effectively under pressure, and the team matters more than the individual. I no longer play rugby, but it crosses my mind every day. I continue to implement the lessons I learned then into my successful career today. Rugby taught me where to find my strength." - Alexandra Whitt - Summit High School 2015, Denver University 2019, Captain, DU Women's Rugby Team

"Summit Rugby taught me so much more than just how to play rugby. I learned not only the benefits of working hard but working together. I learned that family can be blood and chosen. I learned that being a leader is not about being the best but about building the best relationships. Sure, I learned how to tackle, juke, and score tries, yet in the end the greatest lesson I learned is that the true measure of success is how you support those around you." - Alex Rae Cooper Summit High School 2011, Humboldt State University 2015.

Mission

Through the challenge of team participation in the demanding sport of rugby, Summit Rugby teaches leadership, respect, and self-confidence. We encourage player and personal development by stressing sportsmanship, cooperation, understanding, and communication.

Background Statement

The Summit High Girls Rugby Team began in the spring of 1997 and grew from a recreational league to a partnership with the Summit School District in 2005. After obtaining Varsity status in 2006 and continuing to grow, the organization received its official 501(c)(3) designation. In 2016 Summit Rugby launched a Boys program and a youth introduction program to expand our reach to middle school players.

Summit Rugby has supported more than a thousand student athletes and aims to provide opportunities for many more in the years to come.
