Testimonials

"Thank you for giving [our son] an experience that we believe will profoundly shape and enrich his life. Thank you for being mentors and guides whom he could trust, and for drawing out his gifts for service, teamwork, social justice, and cultural exchange. We are immensely grateful to you and the SStS staff here in Vail for meeting John so very well in terms of the foundations of his unique purpose here and his character." -SStS Parent Reflection

Mission

Students Shoulder to Shoulder's mission is to inspire and support generations of ethical leaders. SStS is a prescriptive educational program, a catalyst to connect the moral imagination of high school students to the global community that is imminently theirs. SStS provides cogent opportunities for adolescents to engage their creativity, knowledge, curiosity, and energy with the purpose of preparing themselves and their generation for responsible, intelligent, and compassionate global citizenship. The program's curriculum core, "Five Lenses of SStS" was developed by SStS staff and is updated and tailored annually for each course to remain focused on economics, culture, politics, ethics, and geography.

Background Statement

Our first year of programming in 2007 partnered thirty participants with three NGOs in three diverse settings. NGO members, students, and course instructors returned inspired by their experiences and confident that the goals of SStS are both noble and efficacious. In the program's second year, our participants represented five schools from two states. During the summer of 2009 SStS added Kenya to our destinations, expanded its course instructor training program, and enhanced the use of technology in all aspects of programming. Students Shoulder to Shoulder became a tax deductible 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization in 2009. In 2017, SStS offered ten programs on four continents to students from 24 different schools providing scholarships to over 40% of their participants. In 2019, we sent a record-breaking number, 123 students, abroad to partner with NGOs new and old, including Madres y Familias Deportadas en Accion who SStS has partnered with to provide service, education, collaboration, and cultural exchange at the US/Mexico border.
