Respite Funds Needed by Caregivers of Those With Dementia

Caregivers of those with Dementia provide tremendous numbers of hours of uncompensated care. Frequently, they are unable to leave their loved one. Caregivers are report greater rates of depression, developing other illnesses, and earlier death. It is so important for those caregivers to have breaks. This fund intends to provide paid caregiver hours to those applying and meeting the qualifications.

One pays $40 an hour for a caregiver and most agencies require a 3 hour minimum equaling $120. Expensive and not a lot of respite. We need to raise enough $$$ so substantial vouchers can be given.

As a local group, 100% of the funds will go to those in Southwest CO and we do not retain and administrative fee, so 100% goes to the caregivers.

Mission

The Durango Dementia Coalition’s mission is to connect the dots and make care and resources more accessible to people who have been diagnosed with dementia in the Durango area and Four Corners region.

As members of a rural community, we recognize the challenges people and their loved ones face when it comes to accessing care locally.

Background Statement

Durango Dementia Coalition started 2 years ago based on the experience of a dementia caregiver and former nurse who could not find the “dots” to connect to the care of her loved one. The message resonated with others and we went to work.

SCoRR970, Southwest Colorado Respite Resources was a Pagosa Springs based 501(c)3 whose purpose was raising funds to offer respite to all caregivers. Unfortunately, the creators experienced health issues and it was in danger of closing.

DDC and SCoRR created a mutually beneficial alliance and joined forces. The mission of SCoRR lives on while DDC taps into their expertise.
