"I feel so incredibly grateful and lucky to have found an organization that could help me in so many ways. I received help emotionally, financially, logistically and maybe the most important way is that I've been learning to ask for and accept help which makes life feel a lot less lonely. I feel comforted knowing that I have a place to reach out to when I need input or support. I feel proud that I made it through to the other side. The resource center helped me get to a place where deep down I no longer believe that I am to blame and I am no longer weighed down by negative beliefs about myself."

"Staff are very approachable, supportive, caring...I am beyond grateful."

"My advocate was AMAZING. [Advocate] is invaluable. I couldn't believe how perfect she was in every way."

"I just want to thank everyone at the Resource Center for being there for me and helping me when I truly needed it. Not only have they been helping me, but constantly checking in on me to make sure I have everything I need and if there is anything else they can do. I feel really connected to the Resource Center and am so thankful they were there when I needed them. They are all amazing."

"Thank you for the tremendous support during challenging times!"

Giving Activity

The San Miguel Resource Center empowers and advocates for individuals affected by domestic violence and sexual assault through intervention and supportive services, while promoting social change through prevention education and community awareness.

Background Statement

In 1993, we were founded as the "Tomboy House" by a group of citizens who were concerned that the needs of domestic and sexual violence victims were not being met by local service providers. Before the San Miguel Resource Center (SMRC) was formed, all crisis calls and client contacts related to domestic violence and sexual assault were handled by local law enforcement and social service agencies. The effects of domestic violence can often be complex due to the pervasive consequences of living with frequent episodes of violence and coercion, and local government agencies lacked the time, training, and often the desire to sufficiently address these issues. For this reason, victims/survivors, their families and friends, and community professionals initiated a grassroots effort that resulted in the first victim services agency in San Miguel County. Today, we are still the only organization in our region that provides these services. Over the years, we have significantly expanded our staff and program services in response to greater community need as evidenced by a consistent increase in client numbers. Since 1993, we have evolved from a strictly volunteer organization to a highly credible, well-established service provider agency with eight employees and a team of active volunteers that serves all of San Miguel County and the West End of Montrose County.
