Background Statement
The Sims-Fayola Foundation was founded in 2014 by Dr. Dedrick J. Sims in response to the persistent inequities facing boys and young men of color in schools and communities. After years of leading schools and youth-focused initiatives, Dr. Sims witnessed firsthand how young men were often misunderstood, underserved, or excluded from systems not designed with their strengths, culture, or lived experience in mind.
The Foundation was created to change this. What began as a local effort to provide mentoring, academic support, and leadership development has grown into a comprehensive ecosystem-building organization. Today, the Sims-Fayola Foundation works across classrooms, communities, and policy arenas to ensure boys and young men of color experience belonging, affirmation, and predictable pathways to success.
In 2023, the organization expanded its impact through the development of the Sims Framework, a systems-design approach that guides partners in building environments rooted in Belief, Structure, Practice, Alignment, and Predictability. This framework, now adopted across schools and organizations in Colorado and beyond, anchors all aspects of SFF’s work.
Over the past decade, the Foundation has grown into a trusted leader in youth development, racial equity, and community transformation. We serve as the backbone organization for My Brother’s Keeper Denver, operate high-impact direct service programs across Denver and Aurora, and lead statewide policy and advocacy efforts through the Sims-Fayola Policy & Advocacy Institute.
Through our Vision 2030 strategic plan, SFF is scaling its programs, expanding policy influence, elevating narratives about boys and young men of color, and strengthening systems that support their long-term success. What began as one program has become a movement, powered by youth, families, educators, community partners, and supporters across Colorado.
Our history is rooted in a simple but powerful belief:
When boys and young men of color are surrounded by systems designed for their brilliance, they thrive, and so do their families, schools, and communities.
