While policies shift, our mission doesn’t. Your donation directly supports protection of public lands, inclusive outdoor events, and environmental advocacy in the Telluride region.

Sheep Mountain Alliance is a grassroots community organization dedicated to protecting the environment and the people who are a part of it through advocacy, outreach, and organizing since 1988.

Founded by a group of citizens committed to protecting Sheep Mountain from logging advances, Sheep Mountain Alliance has been a pivotal environmental voice for the Telluride region for nearly four decades. We use grassroots advocacy, outreach, and organizing to protect our irreplaceable public lands, wilderness, wildlife, and water and to advocate for responsible clean energy use and development. We aim to inspire community building and action through year-round programs that elevate inclusive, equitable, and environmentally focused access to and appreciation of the outdoors.

2025 has been a year unlike any other in Sheep Mountain's history. Continual threats to our public lands and decades of environmental protection necessitate around-the-clock vigilance and action. In addition, we lost critical federal funding through the dismantling of federal environmental justice efforts. However, we remain more committed than ever to protecting all that our community holds dear and what makes the Telluride region so special.

For nearly four decades, Sheep Mountain Alliance has been fighting for our wild spaces and the people who love them. And while policies shift, our mission doesn’t.

Please help us double down on our commitment to public lands, wildlife, water, clean energy, and equitable access to the outdoors for all members of our community.

Add YOUR voice to protect places you love!

Our current projects include:

- Developing collaborative approaches to maintaining and bolstering public lands protections through participation in land management planning processes, public commenting, collaboration with state and local government officials, and direct community action.

- Working with community partners to create inclusive and equitable outdoor spaces on our public lands through free, bilingual events including a downhill ski day, ice climbing excursion, Via Ferrata day, overnight hut trip, and summer hiking series.

- Collaborating with EcoAction Partners, a community sustainability nonprofit, to advance initiatives focused on environmental justice in the Telluride region through bilingual workshops on drought and wildfire, workshops on the public commenting process, income-qualified weatherization, and much more.

- Working with local government officials, environmental organizations, and community members to advocate for balanced regulations for county mining land use codes.

- Supporting landscape-level protections for the Dolores River Canyons in Montrose and Mesa Counties in Southwest Colorado. The Dolores River is one of Colorado's last, best wild place—and it's time we permanently protect it!

We'll send you a Sheep Mountain Alliance sticker when you provide your mailing address with your donation! Thanks so much for your support!

Mission

Sheep Mountain Alliance is a grassroots community organization dedicated to protecting the environment and the people who are a part of it through advocacy, outreach, and organizing since 1988.

Background Statement

Sheep Mountain Alliance has served Southwest Colorado for 37 years through grassroots environmental advocacy to protect the region’s public lands, water, wilderness, and wildlife. We inspire community building and action through advocacy, outreach, and programs that elevate inclusive, equitable, and environmentally focused access to and appreciation of the outdoors.

We engage with our community and constituents on environmental issues including forest planning, wilderness expansion, resource extraction, public lands, wildlife habitat protection, water access, and clean energy transitions and partner with regional and national environmental groups, including Southern Rockies Conservation Alliance, The Wilderness Society, Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, San Juan Citizens Alliance, and the San Miguel Watershed Coalition. We encourage and support public comment and coalition participation, and elevate inclusivity and equitable access in the outdoors to ensure that our approach to the outdoors is intersectional and community-centric.

Amidst federal funding cuts, state budget challenges, and the interplay of economic uncertainty and worsening effects from climate change, Sheep Mountain Alliance remains dedicated to innovative, informed approaches and policy outcomes that help identify and rectify the root causes of environmental issues, and to take actions that simultaneously benefit and enrich our community and environment.
