Background Statement
Grace is the founder of Serenity House Africa.
She was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and at 11 years old,she left her country to find safety and a better life in Uganda. She was very young and relied on the kindness of extended family to help me adjust.
In Uganda, she saw children sleeping in churches or on the streets. Many faced abuse, neglect, or exposure to drugs. Witnessing these struggles as a child herself made me want to help, but she could only dream of doing more at the time.
In 2017, she moved to the United States, determined to create opportunities for children like those she had seen. She enrolled at the Community College of Aurora with very little English, worked full-time, and balanced school and work. Two years later, she transferred to a four-year university to pursue a degree in social work, working part-time and applying for every scholarship she could find.
While in school, she saved every dollar she earned, determined to one day build something meaningful. After years of saving, she was finally able to purchase land in Uganda — a place where my dream of giving children a home could begin to take shape.
During this time, she supported two girls who were at risk of dropping out of high school due to school fees and uniforms. Today, both are high school graduates, and their success continues to inspire our work at Serenity House Africa.
After helping these girls, she took on two boys and began building a home for children without family support. In August 2025, a small fundraising event pizza place helped us provide 75 children with school supplies, and 13 children are now fully supported in school, with all fees and supplies covered by Serenity House Africa.
Our goal is to empower children and families from sleeping on church floors to sitting at school desks through education, safe homes, and hope.
