Senior Citizens Action Group Inc

A nonprofit organization

The SSC believes that adults over the age of 55 deserve an opportunity to achieve their greatest potential with physical, social, and emotional health. The SSC teams up with active adults in Moffat County communities to help them reach their goals. The SSC provides a permanent, accessible gathering place to enhance the quality of life for senior citizens through socialization, exercise, creativity, and education, as our mission states.

Our organization is in its eighth year of serving older adults in our community. We have a robust variety of programing available to participants of the SSC. We are adding more and more opportunities all the time. We are working on a plan to reach a more diverse demographic with a focus on outreach to our Hispanic community members. We are hoping to hire a parttime bilingual staff person to help engage interest in programs that Spanish speaking individuals can have the opportunity to participate in. To help meet the health, financial and quality of life needs of many of our community’s older adults, we hired a part-time Resource Navigator to gather the resources available, refer to area partners, and set down one- on-one with people in need to help them find and apply for the resources needed. We are working to expanding services in our Senior Outreach Services program to provide some more tangible services. We were able to offer help with yard work this past summer to area Seniors through a partnership with the Rocky Mountain Youth Corp. We started up some cooking classes in partnership with the CSU extension office and are planning to expand participants opportunities with additional classes. The SSC has secured grant funding to start the CircleTalk program at the SSC and Sunset Meadows in 2023. As it has become more and more apparent that one of the most critical needs for our community’s older population is Mental Health services. We are starting structured support-group meetings using the courses from the “CircleTalk” program, with the goal of forming a healthy group to foster belonging and connection, a place to share personal stories, insights, and feelings.

Our programs include:

Socialization- Coffee & Conversation, Cards & Games, Lunch on the Lawn, Movie nights, Circle Talk, Music nights and many special events.

Exercise- Equipment room, Geri-fit, CT Training, Light Aerobics, Qigong/Tai-Chi, Yoga, Chair Yoga and more.

Education & Art- Drawing, Painting, Tie-Dye, Rock painting, crafts and more. We have educational presentation throughout the year.

Senior Outreach Service (SOS)- This SSC’s outreach program targets homebound, frail, and/or low-income residents age 60 and older who live in Craig and its surrounding communities, striving to improve participants’ quality of life through consistent, appropriate personal contact.

We have a Community Garden project we manage with other community organizations partnering.

Medicare SHIP: SSC has partnered with Medicare Ship to provide seniors with help navigating signing up for Medicare and supplemental plan options. This is a free service to help clients to understand options, make informed choices, know their rights and save money. Our SHIP program serves seniors in Moffat and Rio Blanco counties.

The SSC strives to be a voice for local active adults and senior citizens in Moffat County.

Mission

To provide a permanent accessible gathering place to enhance the quality of life for senior citizens through socialization, exercise, creativity, and education.

Background Statement

The SSC inception dates to 2014, when a group of Moffat County delegates for the Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Colorado (AAA) collaborated with local business owners and community members to create a permanent, accessible gathering place for active adults. In addition to its association with the local branch of the AAA, the SSC partners with NWCO Center of Independence, the City of Craig Parks & Recreation department, Northwest Colorado Health (NWCH), Memorial Regional Health (MRH), and other local entities. As the most prominent voice for local active adults and senior citizens in Moffat County, the SSC strives to improve the lives of all residents through exercise, social programming, community events, and education, thereby building a stronger citizenry for future growth.
