Established in October 2024, Sanctuary CARES provides subsidized maternal and infant care, primarily doula support, to families during the critical stages before and after the arrival of a new baby. Because when a family feels calm, confident, and capable in the early stages of life, they can provide the love and care their baby needs, forming deep connections that last a lifetime.

What exactly does a doula do?

A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to families before, during, and after the arrival of a new baby. Doulas complement the care provided by medical professionals, providing at-home support while honoring each family’s unique values and preferences. This support positively impacts the well-being of the entire family.

From overnight visits to infant feeding consultations, cooking nutritious meals, and providing connections to local resources, Sanctuary CARES’ doulas wrap every family in support and offer referrals that can evolve alongside changing needs.

Donations made on Colorado Gives Day through ColoradoGives.org will be essential to the early success of Sanctuary CARES, directly impacting the health outcomes of vulnerable families in the Boulder-Denver metro area.

Mission

Sanctuary CARES empowers growing families to thrive by providing comprehensive perinatal support, bridging disparities through access to funding, and championing systemic change to improve maternal and family health outcomes.

Background Statement

In the U.S., support for women after childbirth is almost nonexistent. As a result, postpartum women often struggle mentally, physically, and emotionally, which can jeopardize their well-being, their partnerships, and the crucial time needed to bond with their babies. Marginalized populations are disproportionately affected, with BIPOC mothers experiencing challenges at 2-3 times the national average. The current medical system fails to support mothers and babies immediately after birth, leaving them vulnerable and without resources during a critical period for recovery and early baby development.

The statistics are staggering and underscore the importance of Sanctuary CARES:

- 80% of maternal deaths are PREVENTABLE

- 67% of maternal deaths occur in the postpartum period

- 25% of mothers will experience postpartum depression and/or anxiety

- 40% of American mothers miss their six-week post-delivery checkup

Sanctuary CARES champions systemic changes that are backed by research. Implementing evidence-based interventions and policies can significantly improve maternal and family health outcomes, enhance access to care, and reduce health disparities. This ultimately promotes safer and healthier childbearing experiences for all families.
