Mission

SMT’s mission is to provide world-class trails that support a robust local economy and a high quality of life. We envision an accessible trail network that offers ample opportunities for outdoor recreation, while mitigating impacts to natural resources. Today, SMT stewards 65 miles of singletrack—and counting.

Background Statement

From the Monarch Crest and Colorado Trail to the old local Sunset Trail, Salida has a rich and a storied history of hiking, biking, and trail use. Salida Mountain Trails (SMT) formed in 2004 as way for local citizens and trail enthusiasts to better engage with the Bureau of Land Management in developing the Arkansas River Trail Management Plan. In 2005, SMT developed our first official trails proposal, which outlined the basic plans for the Methodist Mountain and Arkansas Hills trails. In the years since, we have continued to build upon that plan, and today we manage more than 65 miles of trails—and counting. SMT leads all maintenance on these trails, and works with land managers and other stakeholders to develop additions and enhancements to the trail network.
