Founded in 1972, Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society is dedicated to the conservation and enhancement of bighorn sheep populations in Colorado and throughout the west. We promote scientific wildlife management and educate the public about the natural history and conservation needs of bighorn sheep.

When RMBS was founded, Colorado's bighorn sheep population was down to around 2,000 individuals. Thanks to the hard work, advocacy, and support of our members, that number has more than tripled to over 7,500. Join the fight to put and keep more bighorn sheep on the mountain!

Mission

Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society is dedicated to the conservation and enhancement of bighorn sheep populations in Colorado and throughout the west. We promote scientific wildlife management and educate the public about the natural history and conservation needs of bighorn sheep.

Background Statement

The Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society (RMBS) was founded in 1975 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving and enhancing populations of bighorn sheep in Colorado and across the West. Over decades, RMBS has partnered with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and other agencies to transplant herds, restore habitat, monitor disease, and educate the public about the Colorado state animal, bighorn sheep, and the critical ecosystems they inhabit. Colorado bighorn sheep populations have grown from a low of 2,000 in the early 1970s to nearly 7,500 today.

The work of RMBS work remains ever important. From sponsoring habitat improvement projects to supporting scientific research on threats like pneumonia outbreaks and domestic-livestock interactions, the RMBS ensures that wild sheep continue to climb the steep cliffs and rocky ridges of Colorado’s mountains.

But such vital work depends on support from people like you. By donating to RMBS, you’re directly helping to fund field studies, public outreach, and critical conservation initiatives that safeguard wild sheep and their habitat, help to further our understanding of wild sheep heath issues, and connect our outdoor-heritage with the future. Your gift will have a lasting impact — helping Colorado’s wild sheep thrive, and ensuring the next generation has the same chance to marvel at these animals in their rugged home.
