Testimonials

"The White River Museum was a delightful surprise! What an amazing collection of artifacts and history in one place. It was clean, organized and the staff seemed well-informed. I will come back again next year, as I know there is so much more to see." Marianne H. Cleveland OH

Background Statement

From the beginning of civilized society, brave men and women have traveled to or through what is now known as Colorado on their way to a new life. Some stopped and settled along the way. In the White River Valley, they shared land and resources with the Ute Indians. Meeker is best known as the location of the last uprising and tragic battle of the Ute Nation and Nathan C Meeker but there is so much more. In 1949, long after the uprising, members of the community felt that it was important that the stories be told for future generations. The Rio Blanco County Historical Society was established to ensure that the records, antiquities, and artifacts were collected, preserved, and shared. In the early 1950s, the museum was purchased and began housing the collected artifacts. Today, The White River Museum is one of the largest curio museums in the nation. The Rio Blanco County Historical Society has added the restored Coal Creek School House, the Milk Creek Battlefield Park, The Garrison, the Outdoor Museum, and The Old West Heritage Cultural Center.
