ROCK serves one of the most rural areas of Colorado where even basic grocery shopping is difficult. Our outreach program has the unique goal to build up the entire community through youth enrichment and community activities, holiday programs, food relief, back to school drives, and emergency relief.

Testimonials

"I am writing to express my appreciation for the hangout program put on by YES and ROCK. I have a teenage daughter who looks forward to this, each week. While there are limited activities for youth in Dove Creek, this outstanding program packs in numerous safe and fun activities for our teenagers. As well as plenty of food. As a parent, it is so comforting to have an outlet for our teens. Furthermore, credit needs to be given to the people who facilitate a fun environment where kids don't even think to look at their phone!" Jenny S.

"I have 8 children ranging from 4-5 year olds to 17 years of age. In 2014 my family was blessed with quadruplets which put a huge financial strain on our family not only after they were born but before as well. We had them in July and came home in August just after school started. We could barely pay our bills let alone feed, cloth, and buy Christmas presents for our children that year. They kept sending letters home from school for angel tree and me being the too proud mama didn't fill them out. We had a ton of support from the community I don't want to leave that out. But on Christmas Eve my family and I were sitting around the table talking and having a great time and here comes Carol Marie with a truck load of gifts ranging from diapers, wipes to gifts for all the older kids. I was amazed and in tears, because I didn't ask and they still knew we needed help." Melissa R.

Good morning I have gone to all of the programs that rock offers. I really like the Family movie nights because it's fun to get out of the house and do something fun. I also really like the art classes. "I've learned so many different art strategies and it keeps me busy during the summer." "Hangout is fun because we try to get all of my friends to go we play games like Just Dance and board games. Sometimes we even play hide and seek in the dark." It makes me feel happy to be able to go to these programs because it keeps me busy and out of the house. It's a safe and fun environment for all the kids in the community and keeps all of us out of trouble.
Love, Jesalynn T. Age 10

"Through the Adult Art program at ROCK I found a new therapy". . . . "All I can say is thank you for giving me back a little piece of myself!" Lenore J.

One of our attending 9-year olds, Holley S.: "I love that I just get to come here and be myself."

"The Golden Angel program is near and dear to my heart. You see I am an EMT and a 911 dispatcher for our little community and every day we see how many elderly people we have in our community that don't have people around them. The Golden Angel program gives my family the opportunity to go out and visit with the elderly and give them a little something to look forward to. It also makes you feel a little glimpse of hope that our youth that participates in this program are learning to be kind and treat the elderly with respect." Melissa R.

ROCK's mission is to reach out to support our community and kids by providing resources such as food, services, and community activities. Our goal is to to build a stronger, more prosperous, and healthier community whose citizens are always proud to call home.

Background Statement

Reaching Out to Community and Kids (ROCK) is a non-profit organization located in Dove Creek, Colorado, a rural town of 724 residents located in the southwest corner of the state. ROCK was founded in February 2013. Dove Creek is a deep-rooted community that has established bonds so significant, we are like a big family. It was apparent and statistically proven, that Dove Creek needed an organization to step in and help our community. ROCK was established to assist with the evolving needs our community faces. Dove Creek and Dolores County's needs have exceeded ROCK's financial capabilities of providing the extensive amount of assistance our community currently needs. ROCK is working towards finding solutions to help on a bigger scale. Diversifying our funding is our priority and will allow our organization to expand and have the ability to impact our community on a larger level. We have done everything possible within our means to help where assistance is needed. We have successfully provided critical and crucial programs our community is in dire need of and otherwise would not receive. Dove Creek's rural location has prevented the establishment of other non-profits targeting the variety of needs in our area. ROCK continuously strives to provide our community with assistance through the current obstacles and hardships the community faces. ROCK pledges to be adaptable to the future needs that arise and are present throughout the community. ROCK's programs are designed to provide our community with essential food assistance, basic need programs, clothing distribution, after school programs and social growth opportunities. We have an alarming number of low income families. According to the US Census, 15,4% of the 724 residents are at or below the national poverty level. We are determined to provide assistance and tools to develop self-sustainability in our rural farming community. Our nearest town of significant size is 35 miles away and where many residents go for basic goods and services. However, many cannot afford fuel and don't have the means of transportation. ROCK has played a crucial and key role in bringing programs local. We believe our children and residents deserve to have equal opportunities, regardless of where they live. The geographical isolation of Dove Creek should not hinder the well-being of our community. Our programs also incorporate opportunities to connect to our nation's heritage, customs and cultures. ROCK strives and aspires to develop solutions and support systems to families in need.
