The Pueblo Zoological Society was founded forty years ago. Early supporters sought to improve conditions for the animals at the city-operated Pueblo Zoo, while developing an education program to better serve the community. In January 1991, Pueblo Zoological Society assumed management of the zoo under an agreement with the City of Pueblo. Since 1991, the zoo has been revitalized with nearly 9 million dollars invested in new exhibits and infrastructure improvements.
In its 34 years of zoo management, the Pueblo Zoological Society has accomplished accreditation by the Association of Zoo's & Aquariums (AZA), doubled the animal collection to more than 140 species, gained placement on the National Register of Historic Places, and successfully lobbied for inclusion in the Pueblo Urban Enterprise Zone. The education and conservation of species remain central to our work. With 90,000+ visitors annually and a membership of 1,800 households, the Pueblo Zoo is one of the most popular cultural facilities in southern Colorado.
