Project Bike Tech

A nonprofit organization

Project Bike Tech is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that supports STEM and CTE education by delivering a turnkey instructional solution for secondary education. Our curriculum promotes hands-on learning, with the bicycle serving as the laboratory for experimentation, and with the classroom as the forum for critical thinking. PBT graduates find their path forward to post-secondary education and exploring new career opportunities that build sustainable communities.

Each Project Bike Tech classroom includes student workstations stocked with a complete range of tools, a workbench, bikes, and workshop supplies.  Our curriculum is developed with and endorsed by industry leaders and has been approved for college credit in some states. The Level 1 and 2 curriculum includes experiential learning opportunities that teaches students mechanical concepts, problem solving, and prepares students for real-world professional work.  It also introduces youth to the health benefits of a bicycling lifestyle.

Testimonials

Principal Testimonial - "Every kid needs a connection to school. What is one kid's connection is not necessarily the other kid's. In pretty much every community, you can find kids that interested in bike. They can get in there and work and build a skill that they might be able to use outside of school and then it
connects with all other potential pathways."

Student Testimonial - "I really like Bike Tech because it is a nice change of pace. We aren't stuck at a desk. We are learning real world, transferrable skills. Because of this class, I know what I want to be when I grow up!"

Mission

Project Bike Tech is a nationally recognized nonprofit dedicated to advancing STEM and CTE education through hands-on, experiential learning with bicycles. We provide comprehensive instructional solutions that foster mechanical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, empowering students to pursue post-secondary education and careers that contribute to sustainable communities. Our industry-endorsed curriculum and well-equipped classrooms inspire youth to explore new opportunities, build technical expertise, and embrace a healthy, active lifestyle.

Background Statement

The PBT program originally started in California after our Founder, Berri Michel, worked with the Santa Cruz Department of Education to develop an accredited curriculum for high schools. It is now a thriving program spreading nationwide with a presence in 51 schools across 15 states and Washington D.C. Over the years, PBT has successfully impacted more than 10,000 students, with our annual number served currently at 2,100. Whether graduates directly enter the workforce or continue on to college, they become aware of how core academic principles can be applied in real world situations, how cycling can lead to a healthy and green lifestyle and how to properly present themselves as a prospective employee in any career path.
