Imagine walking into a space meant for learning and growth, yet every sign, spoken or unspoken, tells you, “You don’t belong” or “You are not enough.” For far too many children, especially those who are neurodivergent or otherwise marginalized, this is a daily reality.

Systemic barriers in education and access to care are not just obstacles to learning, they are threats to mental, emotional, and physical health. When children and families feel unseen or unsupported, the consequences can be devastating. PLAY Education exists to change that narrative.

We work to create environments rooted in whole child health and learning, inclusivity and representation and affirming youth voice.  Through community-driven programming and partnerships, we aim to dismantle systemic barriers and ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Our innovative work is:

  • Advancing Whole Child Wellness & Learning
  • Building Inclusive Communities
  • Driving Community Partnerships for Impact
  • Transforming Systems for Sustainable Change

We are advancing whole child wellness and learning by championing programs that nurture physical, emotional, and social well-being, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive in school and in life.

  • School wellness programs that provide nutrition education, movement breaks, and mental health resources
  • Access to basic needs (healthy snacks, hygiene supplies, clothing) so students can focus on learning
  • Research translation; turning evidence that “healthy students learn better” into actionable school practices
  • Student‑led health initiatives that empower youth to advocate for their own well‑being

We are building inclusive communities by centering our work in equity and belonging, creating affirming spaces where diverse identities are celebrated and every child feels seen, heard and affirmed to be their authentic selves.

  • Collaborative events that bring families, schools, and local businesses together
  • Training and resources for educators to foster inclusive classrooms
  • Cross‑sector partnerships that break down silos between nonprofits, schools, and community organizations
  • Outreach campaigns that celebrate diversity and uplift local voices

We are driving community partnerships for impact by collaborating with schools, local businesses, and organizations to design initiatives that strengthen communities and expand access to resources.

  • Seed funding for joint projects that unite schools, nonprofits, and businesses around shared goals
  • Resource‑sharing that elevate local partners while expanding student and family access to services
  • Community‑driven initiatives that thrive through collaboration
  • Infrastructure for long‑term partnerships, ensuring collective impact is measurable, scalable, and sustainable

We are transforming systems for sustainable change by looking beyond immediate programs and focusing on systemic solutions that shape policies, practices, and culture to create lasting improvements in education and public health.

  • Efforts that reshape policies impacting student health and opportunity
  • Strategic convenings that unite schools, nonprofits, and businesses around equity goals
  • Long‑term initiatives that shift culture and structures, not just programs

Creating environments where children can learn, grown and thrive; just as they are.

Background Statement

The P.L.A.Y. Education Corporation (PLAY Education) was created by Shannon Milliken (she/her), a former physical education teacher and mom, who through her professional and personal journey, desperately wanted to be a catalyst for educational systems change. Her inspiration was her Asian-American daughter, who will grow up and identify as a woman of color. As any caretaker, wanting what is best for children, is the most important work that we as a society, could ever do and ever invest in.

Growing up as a transracial adoptee in middle class, suburbia Colorado, privilege was always at the forefront of opportunity and education for Shannon. Teaching in a variety of districts and schools and working at the Colorado Department of Education allowed her to observe and experience the inequities our educational system faces, to provide diverse, equitable, and inclusive environments for children, specifically in rural, low social-economic communities and historically marginalized and underrepresented populations.

It is Shannon's passion and enthusiasm for children, education and social justice to be the voice for the voiceless and be a driving force to support and implement innovative, creative and novel environments for students to thrive in. Shannon believes in the importance of each child needing to be seen and heard and given the same opportunities to learn, grow and excel, just as they are.
