Testimonials

"Your impact on the next generation is incredible. As I heard one kid exclaim this morning,
"This is the best day of my life!" cannot be underestimated. No doubt, he will remember this
event for years to come. Thank you for making it possible and for all your efforts at the
Pinhead Institute." ~ Punk Science Parent

"Nucla Elementary is so fortunate to have a relationship with Pinhead. They offer our students a view into the world that, as a isolated, rural school, our students may never see. The visit from Bill Weber was no exception. Our students were enamored with his talk and absolutely loved the plane demonstration he put on. Bill was engaging and fun and the students loved every minute of his talk. What a wonderful opportunity for our students to take part in!" ~Sara Bray, Nucla Elementary School

"Our child has been a part of the Pinhead Institute in Telluride since the 4th grade. He is now a senior in High School with an interest in studying robotics and mechanical engineering at University. This is a reality only achieved through the hard work and dedication of the administrators, staff, instructors, volunteers and members of the Pinhead Institute. This program has been instrumental in our child's development, sense of worth and well being. It has helped give him direction and has reinforced the values we as parents have tried to instill in him. The Pinhead Internship was an amazing experience that my child thoroughly enjoyed. While he will move on, Pinhead will forever be a part of our family." ~ 2023 Pinhead Intern Parent

Mission

Pinhead Institute is a Smithsonian Affiliate promoting science education in rural Southwest Colorado. A highly motivated network of the world’s leading scientists supports our many educational programs providing unparalleled access to high-level scientific thinking and discovery. Pinhead Institute educates and inspires children in the greater Telluride region about the wonders of science and technology.

Background Statement

Pinhead was founded by a Telluride mother in 2001 to provide youth with greater exposure to contemporary scientific study. We began with two programs: "Scholars in the Schools" and the "Pinhead Internship," which today are the cornerstones of our organization. Over time we have expanded our programming to meet the changing needs of the 21st century.

While we originally served just a few hundred students, in our 2024/25 program year, Pinhead’s programs reached 4,800+ participants across school districts from Telluride to Naturita and Montrose to Cortez, totaling 26,000+ student contact hours.
