Background Statement
The Philomatheon Club began in 1918 when 10 girls formed a social group with sponsors Emma VanSant and Bell Norcross. Focused on self-improvement, they created themed programs, skits, and songs on topics ranging from fashion to women’s roles and war support. That same year, they pooled their allowances to give their first Christmas food basket—a tradition that continues today.
Philo officially became a 501(c)(3) in 1919 and has supported the community through countless service projects and fundraisers. Over the years, members have hosted charity balls, style shows, home tours, and holiday markets. Today, they remain dedicated to friendship and service while adapting to modern needs.
Ongoing projects include the Holiday Giving program, which partners with Thompson School District and House of Neighborly Service to provide food baskets and gifts for local families, and the Integrated Early Childhood program, which began in 1937 and still supplies resources to young students. Since 1971, Philo has awarded scholarships to Loveland and Berthoud residents pursuing vocational and technical education, fully funded by the Women’s Amateur Golf Tournament. Members also sponsor blood drives and support Alternatives to Violence with donations, fundraising, and advocacy.
For over 100 years, Philo has blended service with sisterhood. More than 750 women have been members, creating lifelong friendships and continuing the legacy of giving back to their community.
