Background Statement
Before PFLAG’s first meeting in New York City on March 11, 1973, founder Jeanne Manford marched by the side of her gay son, Morty Manford—an accomplished activist and leader —at the 1972 Christopher Street Liberation Day March (the precursor to New York Pride), held on June 25, 1972. Weeks before, on April 29, 1972, Jeanne’s letter to the editor in defense of her son to advocate for rights for LGBTQ+ people was published in the New York Post. That letter launched a movement. Together, Jeanne and Morty made plans to start an organization for LGBTQ+ people and their parents. It’s what we now know as PFLAG.
