Paradox Sports envisions a world with access to adaptive opportunities, which empowers individuals, builds communities, and honors the fact that ability does not prevent opportunity.
"Shortly after I moved to Colorado I went to Jackson [Wyoming] and saw the Tetons for the first time. At the time I thought climbing it would be outside my abilities and tabled the idea in the back of my mind. Not ever believing that a little over a year I would find myself at top, on my birthday, with a group of people I am proud to call friends. For me reaching the summit was not an act of conquest over the mountain or adversity, but one of reintroduction to myself and qualities that I had thought lost. In some ways it was a homecoming and affirmation that I was going in the right direction." -Paradox Sports Athlete, Dan Boozan
"Paradox Sports takes a life of "cant's" and turns it into a life of "absolutely!!" In just 2 trips, they have shown me not only a life of physical accomplishments far beyond what I ever thought I could do, but they are opening my heart, soul and mind to a new world of interpersonal relationships I could have never started without them!"
-Paradox Sports Athlete, Elizabeth Christie
"I believe the introduction to concepts/content and hands-on experience you provided was a great stepping stone for our students to understand HOW to make experiences inclusive. They already believed in the importance of inclusion, but the clinic allowed them to see how they could influence inclusion within the profession. The fact that they found the information and techniques less than mysterious is fantastic-it empowers each of them to grab hold of the ideas and techniques and implement them wherever they are working."
Paradox Sports transforms lives and communities through adaptive climbing opportunities that defy convention.
PS was co-founded in 2007 by world-renowned climber, Timmy O'Neil, Major D.J. Skelton and outdoor industry innovator Malcolm Daly. Timmy has climbed in the most remote ranges of the world, completing first ascents from Greenland to Patagonia. D.J. Skelton served in our nation's Army for over two decades. In 2004, D.J. was severely wounded on tour in Iraq and has since assisted wounded service members and their families in their recovery and rehabilitation. Malcom Daly is a luminary in the outdoor world having started numerous climbing related organizations and businesses. He sustained a life-altering injury while on a climbing expedition and has become a leader and innovator in adaptive climbing around the world. Paradox Sports has become the nationwide leader in Adaptive Climbing and a leader in the adaptive industry. In 2014, PS hosted 39 successful participant-based events totaling 71 days of programming involving 322 participants with physical disabilities and 180 community volunteers. In 2015 PS published the first of its kind, comprehensive Adaptive Climbing Manual, premiered two climbing films in the Mountain Film Festival in Telluride and Adventure Film Festival in Boulder, along with proudly sponsoring, the below the knee (BK) amputee, Craig DeMartino, to compete in the Paraclimbing World Championships in Gijon, Spain. The mission of Paradox Sports seeks to recognize and foster an individual's potential and strength, defying the assumption that people with a physical disability can't lead a life of excellence. We provide inspiration, opportunities and specialized adaptive equipment so that anyone is able to be an active participant in human-powered sports.
On average 35% of Paradox Sports participants have some form of physical disability or amputation, 30% of have paralysis or incomplete paralysis due to spinal cord injuries, 15% have reduced motor control due to other neurological conditions (including stroke), and 20% are caregivers, family, or friends of these individuals.
