Palisade, CO was settled in the 1890s and officially founded as a town on April 4, 1904.

We are located on the Western Slope on the banks of the Colorado River, at the eastern end of the Grand Valley, protected by the Bookcliffs and palisades (our namesake!) to the north and the Grand Mesa to the east, with views of the Colorado National Monument to the west.

Continuing a legacy of excellence for over 120 years, the orchards of Palisade produce the best peaches in the world.

The Palisade Historical Society is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and communicating this unique history, from the early days of the coal mines, the importance of irrigation & agriculture, to the people whose stories are woven into the fabric of this town, and more.

Our collections and acquisitions are displayed in the Palisade History Museum, which offers free admission and is open 4 days a week, year-round. Private tours of the Museum are available by appointment as well. We offer guided and self-guided tours of the town, and our Historic Walking Tour Brochures are available for free at the Museum or at various locations around town.

We have been gathering oral histories of the people who have made this place their homes for generations. We do outreach to local elementary classes to teach the next generation about their past and instill a love of history at an early age. We host free monthly History Talks at a local winery, open to the public in a friendly, casual environment. We offer a variety of topics and love engaging with our community!

We are also the stewards of The Palisade Tribune, our newspaper of record from its first issue on June 6, 1903 until it ceased publishing on March 14, 2014, and we are in the process of digitizing the entire collection through the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection, where they are available in a free searchable database!

The Palisade Historical Society is proud to be a valuable resource for locals and tourists alike. If you are interested in learning more and supporting this cause, check out HistoricPalisade.org for more information. We'd love to connect with you!

Mission

The Palisade Historical Society is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and communicating the unique history of Palisade, Colorado.

Background Statement

We have renovated a pre-1939 log building into Palisade’s first history museum as the permanent home for our collection of historic photos, documents, and memorabilia.

Another important project has been our work with preserving, digitizing, and adding issues of The Palisade Tribune, our newspaper of record from June 6, 1903 to March 2014 to the Colorado Historic Newspaper Collection database. It is free to search the database, and we continue fundraising to get as many of the remaining issues on the database as possible.
