Packs of Hope is a non-profit humanitarian organization dedicated to providing hope to every child. We aim to support the dignity of children and adolescents by meeting their basic needs. We work in partnership with the community and county human service agencies to supply backpacks filled with essential clothing items to children and youth who are moving into foster and kinship care.

Our backpacks are given to children from newborn to 18 years old. Each Pack of Hope includes a shirt, pants, sweatshirt, pajamas, socks, underwear, toiletries, a book, and a toy. All items in the packs are brand new.

Through our partnership with county human service agencies, caseworkers can distribute Packs of Hope directly to the children and youth transitioning into new homes at no cost to the county or child. Each month over 400 backpacks are delivered to 9 counties along the Front Range. These backpacks are handed out to children as they come through the Human Services Department.

Packs of Hope has been sustained solely by the dedicated efforts of volunteers for the past 16 years, ensuring that the majority of monetary contributions directly benefit the children in our care. Previously operating under the umbrella of I58 Networks, we transitioned into an independent 501(c)3 organization last year. Our active board diligently oversees the operations of Packs of Hope, demonstrating unwavering dedication to our mission. We are immensely thankful for the invaluable contributions of hundreds of volunteers who diligently fulfill backpack orders year-round, as well as our steadfast supporters who tirelessly ensure our shelves remain stocked, enabling us to provide for the precious foster children in our community.

Other Services we offer -

Packs of Hope understands that navigating life's challenges can be difficult, especially for youth under 18 who need to fulfill court-ordered community service hours. That's why we offer a mentoring program that creates a safe and supportive environment. Here, young people can not only complete their service but also find guidance and encouragement from dedicated mentors who genuinely care about helping them through tough times.

We also provide tutoring services to ensure academic support, and if a family's situation is challenging, we’re committed to helping by offering food from our partnering food pantry. We’re proud to have been serving our community in this way for three years, and we are here to make a positive impact in the lives of those who need it most.

Mission

To bring hope and joy into a child's life during the midst of a crisis while also providing for their basic needs.

Background Statement

Packs of Hope was created in 2008 by Michelle Smithling, a compassionate foster parent who truly understands the challenges children face when entering foster care. Recognizing the urgent needs of these vulnerable kids, Michelle’s heart led her to take action. She wanted to offer comfort during what can be an incredibly difficult time, and so she collaborated with Jefferson County to create a meaningful solution: backpacks filled with new clothing, toiletries, comfort items, and a book. Each item is carefully chosen to reflect our commitment to providing these precious children the best possible start, while also easing the burden for their foster families.

With the support of a caring community, Michelle delivered her first 15 backpacks, marking the beginning of a journey that now spans nine counties and provides over 400 backpacks each month. Our focus on ensuring that every child receives clothing that fits is rooted in our desire to bring a sense of joy and dignity to those who often arrive with very little.

The impact of these backpacks extends beyond the children—they serve as a lifeline for caseworkers and foster families too. For many children, selecting their own backpack can be a small yet significant step toward feeling safe and valued in a new environment. This simple act fosters connection, comfort, and trust in moments that can often feel scary and overwhelming. Foster families, equipped with a Pack of Hope, can breathe a little easier, knowing they have the essentials needed to welcome a child into their home.

Packs of Hope is solely run by compassionate volunteers and supported by a community that cares deeply. In 2023, we proudly donated 4,945 backpacks, powered by the hearts and hands of over 1,500 volunteers who contributed more than 10,000 hours of their time.

We also recognize the needs of youth fulfilling court-ordered community service, offering them a safe space where they can feel seen and heard. Our program not only provides an opportunity to complete service hours but also offers mentorship, tutoring, and access to resources that can help them and their families heal and grow.

Every backpack represents more than just supplies; it symbolizes hope, compassion, and a commitment to caring for those in need. Together, we continue to make a positive impact in the lives of children and families, reminding them that they are never alone on their journey.
