Background Statement
Packs of Hope was created in 2008 by Michelle Smithling, a compassionate foster parent who truly understands the challenges children face when entering foster care. Recognizing the urgent needs of these vulnerable kids, Michelle’s heart led her to take action. She wanted to offer comfort during what can be an incredibly difficult time, and so she collaborated with Jefferson County to create a meaningful solution: backpacks filled with new clothing, toiletries, comfort items, and a book. Each item is carefully chosen to reflect our commitment to providing these precious children the best possible start, while also easing the burden for their foster families.
With the support of a caring community, Michelle delivered her first 15 backpacks, marking the beginning of a journey that now spans nine counties and provides over 400 backpacks each month. Our focus on ensuring that every child receives clothing that fits is rooted in our desire to bring a sense of joy and dignity to those who often arrive with very little.
The impact of these backpacks extends beyond the children—they serve as a lifeline for caseworkers and foster families too. For many children, selecting their own backpack can be a small yet significant step toward feeling safe and valued in a new environment. This simple act fosters connection, comfort, and trust in moments that can often feel scary and overwhelming. Foster families, equipped with a Pack of Hope, can breathe a little easier, knowing they have the essentials needed to welcome a child into their home.
Packs of Hope is solely run by compassionate volunteers and supported by a community that cares deeply. In 2023, we proudly donated 4,945 backpacks, powered by the hearts and hands of over 1,500 volunteers who contributed more than 10,000 hours of their time.
We also recognize the needs of youth fulfilling court-ordered community service, offering them a safe space where they can feel seen and heard. Our program not only provides an opportunity to complete service hours but also offers mentorship, tutoring, and access to resources that can help them and their families heal and grow.
Every backpack represents more than just supplies; it symbolizes hope, compassion, and a commitment to caring for those in need. Together, we continue to make a positive impact in the lives of children and families, reminding them that they are never alone on their journey.
