The PEN Difference

Your donation to the Parent Engagement Network (PEN) is an investment in the future of families and children in our community. The recent US Surgeon General’s report underscores the vital role that parents play in shaping their children's well-being, yet many face daunting challenges that lead to feelings of fear, shame, and isolation. With your support, PEN can provide essential resources and build a strong community that empowers parents to overcome these hurdles.

By donating to PEN, you help create a transformative environment where parents can access expert guidance, connect with others facing similar challenges, and learn practical strategies to nurture healthy relationships with their children. Your generosity ensures that we can offer programs and materials that promote resilience and support families in navigating life's complexities.

Every contribution makes a difference. Help us strengthen families, improve parenting skills, and ultimately foster a generation of confident, thriving children. Together, we can ensure that no parent feels alone—your support can change lives. Donate to PEN today and be part of a movement that champions engaged, informed, and empowered parenting!

"People in Boulder Valley have found PEN programs to be a valuable asset for almost 2 decades. They have been an invaluable resource to our parent community, as well as the administrators, staff, and professionals who work with youth and families. Please reach out to them with any questions and consider making a donation to their cause."
Sincerely,
--Dr. Rob Anderson
Superintendent of Schools, September, 2019

"While working with my son's PEN school team, I found that all parents speak the language of wanting the best for their kids. This universal language opens communication and support across barriers and is modeled by PEN volunteers." (Parent- PEN School Team Leader)

"Parents want to hear and learn from other parents. What have you done that worked? Sharing solutions saves time and resources and gives motivation and strength. Other parents have gone through the same things, what can we learn from each other?"(Parent- PEN Monthly Community Coaching)

Giving Activity

Mission

The Parent Engagement Network's (PEN) mission is "to support parents in raising healthy, happy humans."

PEN meets parents where they are, helping them successfully navigate the parenting journey by:

• Providing strength-based educational programs from leading experts that empower parents with constructive tools and information

• Facilitating engagement opportunities so parents can connect and build communities of support

• Serving as hub, offering reliable access to relevant resources about issues that matter most

PEN differentiates from other similarly named organizations by the type of engagement services it provides: starting with parents taking care of themselves and recognizing their humanity.

Since 2001, PEN has recognized parents as the key to thriving families. Parents who learn to put aside fear, shame, and blame can be present to what their child is going through, open to learning, and unapologetic about sharing, accessing resources, and taking actions.

Background Statement

In 2001, parents of the Boulder Valley School District responded to a call to action to address high rates of drug and alcohol use and other high risk behaviors in local youth. A Substance Abuse Task Force was formed, funded by a grant from the US Department of Education's Safe and Drug-Free Schools. Parents advanced their involvement, founding the Parent Engagement Network (PEN), which became a 501(c)3 in 2009. PEN maintained an alliance with BVSD and other organizations, while expanding its initiatives.

PEN leaders recognized that risky behaviors were symptoms and set out to take a strength-based approach and address prevention. PEN initiated work to empower parents with educational resources & programs so they could better understand parenting tools that could help reduce risky behaviors and promote resilience. PEN launched community events, with experts addressing relevant topics and facilitated volunteer-led, school and community based programs.
