The Neighborhood Play School is a community learning space where the intentional environment encourages whole-child development and nurtures connections for children and their caregivers. We offer educational programming for children ages 1.5 - 4.5 and parent education opportunities.

At the Neighborhood Play School, we believe…

…that all students are unique. It is our passion to work with student’s individual needs in a safe and supportive manner. …in a classroom environment that is welcoming, loving, and stimulating. In this type of environment, students are able to express their emotions, remain engaged, challenge themselves, and overcome obstacles.

…in creating community in classrooms, partnerships with families, and collegiality amongst staff. The Reggio Emilia, a specific play-based philosophy,  believes that schools, teachers, parents, and children are co-constructors of knowledge and have equal collaboration

.…children learn best through play. When in an intentional, scaffolded, developmentally appropriate play-based teaching model, students can engage and create freely, explore concept understanding, and discuss their thoughts with peers and educators.

…in an educational environment that focuses on the whole child, specifically their social and emotional development. Students should have opportunities to make responsible choices, develop self-awareness and self-management, initiate their own learning, solve social conflicts and build self-esteem.

Mission

The Neighborhood Play School is a community learning space where the intentional environment encourages whole child development and nurtures connections for children and their caregivers.

Background Statement

The Neighborhood Play School (NPS) was founded by Marti Freeman and a group of like-minded preschool educators who believed passionately that developmentally appropriate, play-based, half-day preschool should remain an option for Denver's families.

The first preschool class and caregiver-child classes began in 2023 with just one classroom rented at the Kirk of Bonnie Brae in the neighborhood of Cory-Merrill. The preschool is thriving, and there is a high demand for more programming, specifically for the younger ages.

NPS uses an emergent curriculum that focuses on all developmental domains: social-emotional development, language development, cognitive development, fine motor and gross motor development. Thematic units are chosen based on the children's interests and developmental needs. Children are exposed to and learn literacy, math, social studies, science, and art through play.
