Testimonials

"An amazing event! It is a program that is both dazzling to the eye and richly layered with ideas about the breadth of culture and craft. It reminds us of the force of filmmaking about things that matter, worlds worth exploring, and conversations worth sustaining." - Ken Burns, filmmaker

"I love documentaries because they teach us critical thinking, but Mountainfilm takes that a step further and transforms the critical thinking into critical living."
- David Charles Rodrigues, Director, Gay Chorus Deep South

"Mountainfilm is the single most inspiring event that I attend each year. It is a chance to rub elbows with modern-day heroes, with people who are actually making a difference. A chance to see films that would be lost. A chance to find out what's really happening in the world and to meet people who are living their dreams."
-Ace Kvale, Adventure Photographer

"There are other film festivals that are aesthetically interesting, but no others that I know of are so politically, socially, culturally and environmentally important. I wish that every moviegoer in America could find his way to Telluride."
-Andre Gregory, actor, playwright

Mission

Mountainfilm uses the power of film, art and ideas to inspire audiences to create a better world.

Background Statement

Started in 1979, Mountainfilm is one of America's longest-running film festivals. Through the years, in and out of trends and fads, the festival has always been best described by one unchanging word: inspiring. Far more than any other adjective, that's how festival audiences describe their experience.

In addition to screening leading independent documentary films from around the world, the festival includes a symposium on a contemporary issue, art and photography exhibits, early morning coffee talks, outdoor programs, a book-signing party, an ice cream social, student programs and a closing picnic/awards ceremony. Presentations and panels are scheduled throughout the Memorial Day weekend event with a wide diversity of special guests, ranging from artists to adventurers and academics to activists.
