Testimonials

"Helping get the most beautiful, locally-grown, organic food to a community so excited to have it is wonderful. I also love supporting an organization doing such incredible work with my time and energy." - Sue W., regular volunteer

"I have a hard time budgeting on Social Security and the fresh food donations to me from the garden was a big help with my grocery bill." Elaine C., Backyard Harvest recipient

"I am so excited to incorporate the school garden into my curriculum! We took a tour of the garden on the first week of school and I was so energized by the excitement and conversation the garden created. Just last week, I watched a student that struggles in the classroom excel during our first lesson outside. It was a joy to see this student become the leader and the one with the knowledge that other students admired." - Renne B., secondary science teacher

Mission

The mission of Mountain Roots Food Project is to cultivate a resilient and equitable food system in the Gunnison Valley of Colorado by enhancing healthy connections between food, earth, and community. We foster knowledge, teach skills, and provide opportunities that ensure access to affordable, nutritious food that is regionally based and sustainably produced.

Background Statement

Mountain Roots Food Project is a community-driven food systems organization founded in 2010 in Gunnison and Crested Butte, Colorado.

What started as neighbors coming together around local food has grown into a vibrant community organization that is a trusted regional leader advancing sustainable agriculture, food access, and education.

We work to cultivate a resilient local food system by growing food, teaching people of all ages how to grow and cook it, and ensuring equitable access to nutritious, locally produced food for all residents of the Gunnison Valley and beyond. Our programs span the full food system—from seed to table to soil again—integrating education, community engagement, and food security.

Mountain Roots manages community farms and gardens throughout Gunnison County, operates a district-wide Farm to School and environmental education program reaching more than 2,000 youth annually, and leads the Healthy Futures AmeriCorps program that places service members across rural Colorado to build capacity in food systems organizations. Our Backyard Harvest program distributes 7400 produce boxes, over 66,000 pounds of fresh local food each year to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity, while our NextGen | ReGen Beginning Farmer Training Program builds the next generation of regenerative farmers through seasonal internships and registered apprenticeships.

By combining education, food production, distribution, and workforce development under one umbrella, Mountain Roots strengthens the health, sustainability, and economic vitality of our community. Our work is guided by the belief that healthy lands produce healthy food, which builds healthy people and communities.
