Montessori del Mundo

A nonprofit organization

Montessori del Mundo (MdM) offers Denver and Aurora families the only Spanish/English dual language Montessori program in the eastern Denver metro area. We provide students with a fully individualized, developmentally appropriate, rigorous academic program that teaches and celebrates bilingualism.

MdM was founded out of a desire to fundamentally change the way our society views people of color and people whose native language is not English. In order to achieve its mission and vision, MdM works to create a school culture that respects and celebrates the skills and contributions of all of its students and that is truly inclusive at all levels. MdM is strongly committed to social justice, inclusiveness, and racial equity and incorporates these themes in several ways throughout all of its programming.

"When we were debating about what elementary school to choose, we knew we wanted to be sure that our kids were challenged, that their school emphasized not just academic development but also development of the whole person and that the school felt intimate. We are so glad that we chose Montessori del Mundo because it has offered that, and so much more, to our children. Watching their Spanish fluency grow beyond our own abilities has been a great source of pride. We can see too that the Montessori model is able to be individualized to continue to keep them challenged, regardless of whether or not they are ahead of their peers. Our kids have a passion for social justice and a well developed racial identity that I know has been encouraged by the school leadership and community. We love that they feel very connected to their school as well, that they feel a sense of belonging and are appreciated by teachers and peers alike. As our oldest is set to graduate from MdM next year, we are so grateful for all of the gifts the school has given our family over the years."

"Si buscas la mejor opción para la educación de tus hijos, Montessori del Mundo es el lugar ideal. Además de la calidad académica , serán tratados con amor y respeto. Definitivamente 5 estrellas."

"This school is truly a researched based community. They are not simply teaching kids, they are demonstrating a working network of parents, students, teachers, and administers committed to lifelong learning. Every small action taken within the building represents a process of deep care, reflection and research. Any child lucky enough to grow up within the Montessori del Mundo community will posses unique academic and interpersonal skills throughout his/her entire life."

"Es una muy buena escuela. Un lugar increíble donde los niños de diversos grupos étnicos pueden sentirse apreciados y que sí pertenecen. En esta escuela la cultura y la diversidad de idiomas son valoradas."

"We are so happy with the results we are getting from this school. Our six year old is reading in English and Spanish.... Wow! We love the Montessori learning system."

The mission of Montessori del Mundo is to prepare all students for success in college and the future bilingual workforce and to build a strong, educated, bilingual community.

MdM's vision is that graduates will be bilingual, self-motivated, critical thinkers, with a love of learning, who will shape and advance the integrated communities of the 21st century.

Background Statement

Efforts to start MdM began in 2012 when the school’s founder and current Special Education Coordinator, Karen Farquharson, recognized the need for an educational program that would meet the needs of a bilingual community and workforce. She wanted to create a school that would develop bilingual and biliterate Spanish speakers through a program that values knowledge of Spanish as an academic language and sees Spanish as an asset to support further education and career success. Karen had been a founding teacher when the now highly-successful Valdez Elementary in northwest Denver initially adopted a dual-language Montessori program. She saw in her classroom and school-wide at Valdez the positive impact that a dual-language Montessori program had on both native Spanish- and native English-speaking students. She worked for over two years to bring such a program to Aurora, and MdM opened in fall 2014 with preschool through 2nd grade. The school grew one grade per year to reach full build-out in 2018-19 as a Pre-K through 6th-grade program. In 2025, MdM will begin an expansion that will ultimately allow the school to serve infants through 8th graders.
