Montessori Intergenerational Learning Communities (MILC) dba: Early Childhood Service Corps (ECSC)
In a world that often feels increasingly divided by age and experience, the Early Childhood Service Corps (ECSC) is weaving an essential thread of connection between generations. Founded by Lisa Armao, a leader with over 30 years of experience in early childhood education, ECSC was created as a robust response to two urgent challenges: the shortage of early childhood educators and the growing epidemic of loneliness among older adults. Lisa spent decades witnessing firsthand the critical gaps in early childhood classrooms, gaps that were only magnified by the pandemic. Yet she also saw incredible, untapped potential among older adults, a population brimming with wisdom, patience, and a desire to make a difference. By bridging these two needs, ECSC creates connections, fulfillment, and impact opportunities. To borrow the words of anthropologist Margaret Mead: “Connections between generations are essential for the mental health and stability of a nation.”
In the bustling world of early childhood education, a powerful force is at play—one that bridges the gap between generations and weaves a tapestry of shared experiences and wisdom. The magic lies in the integration of older adults into the vibrant classrooms, where their presence not only shapes the minds of young learners but also nourishes the souls of those who have traversed the journey of life.
The Early Childhood Service Corps (ECSC) is an innovative, intergenerational response to the critical workforce need in the Early Childhood Field and to the unprecedented need for older Americans to return to the workforce. ECSC provides training, education, and support for adults (50+) to become Early Childhood Teachers who are qualified to work as substitute teachers, part-time floaters, classroom teachers, or assistant teachers in licensed Early Childhood Education (ECE) facilities. We are actively recruiting adults 50+ to serve as Corps Members in our program and help the struggling Early Childhood Industry.
Mission- To integrate older adults into the field of early childhood.
Vision: A world where purposeful engagement and relationships between young children and aging adults, including those with memory loss, is ommonplace, by creating a community based model for recruiting, training, and employing a service corps of older adults to provide flexible support in Early Childhood.
The Story of Early Childhood Service Corps
Early Childhood Service Corps was born out of a need to continue and build upon an existing program that was going to disband due to the organization that previously held this program going out of business. ECSC came to MILC from Boomers Making Change in 2022. ECSC started by focusing on needs that could be addressed during COVID.
To help address critical human resource shortages in the Early Childhood field, Early Childhood Service Corps recruits, trains and deploys older adults to serve in both direct service and capacity-building roles in existing early childhood programs, as business advisors, classroom volunteers and creates a potential pathway to employment in the Early Childhood field as a substitute or full-time classroom teacher. We are one of the first organizations to amplify the power of older adults in the early childhood field.
