Testimonials
The following story about a lady named Kathy F. is not a unique occurrence at Mission Medical Center.
Her story is representative of many of our patients. Kathy is the mother of three, and she entered the primary care
clinic in a state of desperation and medical instability that resulted from high blood pressure and asthma. She had not been able to afford her medications for the previous 6 months, as she had no financial means. She shared with us that her husband, who was a corporate executive and the bread winner in the family, literally went to work one morning and never returned. She was in Michigan at that time and had no means to provide for her family's shelter, food, clothing, and health care. It was through his employment that she and her children had access to health insurance. She made the decision to move to Colorado Springs to live with her adult son who was stationed at Fort Carson. This living arrangement had to be very temporary, as he lived in an area on base that did not allow any family members to reside with him.
When she entered the clinic for her appointment to determine her eligibility for being admitted, the admissions director noted that she was having trouble breathing and was in real distress. She was ushered into the clinic and examined by one of the physicians who determined that she needed to be admitted to the hospital immediately to save her life and stabilize her medically.
After her release from the hospital, she returned to the clinic for follow-up care and for her medications. She not only received the needed medical services and medications, but she also received loving concern and case management by our medical staff, including information about where she could obtain housing and food assistance, as well as instruction of how to manage her chronic conditions. Our staff also counseled her on where her children could receive medical care.
She is one of our success stories, in that she is now medically stable, has gone to school and is now a certified medical assistant and is gainfully employed. She has a rental residence, and her children have been successful in school. She is now eligible and has been successfully transferred to Peak Vista Community Health Centers for continuing care.
This is story about a remarkable woman, Renee K., who was not only in desperate need of a compassionate touch, a word of encouragement, and a prayer of hope when she walked in the door of Mission Medical Clinic, but also the wisdom, discernment, and expertise of the medical and dental staff. She had just been discharged from the hospital, and her blood pressure was very high; she was dizzy, had a severe headache, and had large blood vessels that were damaged and in danger of rupturing.
She relates that she lost her job and her health insurance due to her medical problems. She was without her medications for a year, as she could not afford to purchase them. She said it was either buy food or medicine, and she chose food for her and her family.
She smoked 2 packs of cigarettes per day and her eating habits were only causing her to gain weight and her blood pressure to go higher. She did not know what a healthy diet was, and she was overweight. Also, she had severe gum disease and tooth decay, and she was in intense pain. She also had vision problems due to eye disease caused by the high blood pressure. Severe allergies, asthma, and migraines also plagued her.
It took many months of careful evaluation and medication adjustment on the part of the medical staff to reach a safe blood pressure and to address all of the problems. During this time, she was seen by a cardiologist, a dietitian, a lab to evaluate sleep apnea, and the ophthalmologist, all at no cost to her. Many blood tests were also done at no cost to Renee.
She has tried off and on to quit smoking and succeeded for periods of time, but then has resumed, especially when major life stressors occur. She has had a significant weight loss of 97 pounds over a 4-year period, and her blood pressure is safer and more stable.
She had not had positive experiences at the dentist in her past and was very anxious and nervous about being evaluated and treated by the dental staff. She stated that she had not had her teeth cleaned in many years. Needless to say, this resulted in severe gum disease, massive tooth decay, and abscessed teeth. She stated the pain was severe; she felt weak and nauseated most of the time and could not sleep...
