Background Statement
Miners Alley Playhouse is a 501c(3) organization founded as Morrison Theater Company, now located in downtown Golden. An award-winning professional theater, Miners Alley offers live theater, musicals, comedy, improvisation, and classes, providing an entertainment center for audiences and an artistic home for artists in the greater Denver area for nearly thirty years.
After its founding in 1989 and subsequent incorporation in 1992, Miners Alley Playhouse quickly became a core component of Morrison's economic, artistic, cultural, and social matrix. In 1993, Miners Alley teamed up with the Town of Morrison to compete for the US WEST "Colorado Initiatives Rural Economic Development Grant," winning first prize. This $125,000 award jump-started a campaign that raised $180,000 to restore the historic town hall for multiple uses including the Morrison Theater Company, which performed in residence for 13 years. While in Morrison, Miners Alley developed a reputation as a quality producing company and brought many classic plays to the stage, cultivating a tradition of bringing new and innovative works to Denver metro audiences that continues to this day.
In June 2003 Mines Alley moved to a newly restored theater above Foss Drug in Golden (previously a restaurant), thereby assuring access to a theater facility all year long, abundant parking, and a state of the art venue that provides for plays, classes, and concerts in addition to visual art exhibition space.
Today, Miners Alley is recognized as a premier theater company in the Jefferson County and the Denver metro area, presenting both theatrical classics and new works. Miners Alley has presented world premiers, has received numerous local and regional awards, and has been featured twice in the national entertainment weekly, Variety. Miners Alley serves an audience of over 20,000 adults, youth, and children each year.
