Help Colorado Students Access HBCU Excellence

Colorado students deserve to know about Historically Black Colleges and Universities. They deserve to believe they belong at an HBCU. And they deserve the support to make it happen.

That's why Mile High HBCU Weekend, Inc. exists.

The Challenge

Colorado has no local HBCUs. In underserved communities across the state, talented Black students graduate high school without ever hearing about Howard, Spelman, Morehouse, Hampton, or the 100+ other HBCUs that have transformed generations of Black scholars.

Many guidance counselors don't promote HBCUs. Families worry about distance and cost. Students miss out on institutions that offer:

  • Smaller class sizes and individualized attention
  • Faculty and staff who look like them and champion their success
  • Rich cultural traditions and lifelong networks
  • Environments where Black excellence is the norm, not the exception

The data speaks for itself: HBCUs represent just 3% of U.S. colleges but produce:

  • 70% of Black doctors and dentists
  • 50% of Black engineers
  • 80% of Black judges
  • The majority of Black educators, business leaders, and changemakers

Our Approach

Mile High HBCU Weekend, Inc. bridges the access gap through three core strategies:

1. Celebration & Community: Our annual Mile High HBCU Weekend brings together HBCU alumni, students, and families through networking events, cultural celebrations, and community gatherings. Our inaugural 2025 weekend attracted 300+ attendees who celebrated HBCU pride and connected across generations and schools.

2. Education & Awareness: We will provide college readiness workshops, comprehensive HBCU guides, school presentations and alumni panels, and college fair participation. We developed  "A Different World: A Student's Guide to HBCUs" to demystify the application process, financial aid opportunities, and campus life. We are partnering with local schools to ensure every guidance counselor and student knows HBCUs are an option.

3. Scholarships & Financial Support: We plan to award scholarships to Colorado students attending HBCUs, reducing financial barriers that prevent talented students from accessing excellence. Your Colorado Gives Day donation directly funds these scholarships and helps students cover application fees, campus visits, testing costs, and first-year expenses.

Why Now

We've proven we can build community and engage students. Now we need sustainable funding to award scholarships and expand our reach.

Without support, talented Colorado students will continue missing out on HBCUs simply because they don't know these institutions exist. With your help, we ensure every student knows their options and has resources to attend.

Who We Serve

Middle and high school students in grades 6-12, their families, and HBCU alumni residents. We focus on underserved communities where HBCU awareness is limited and students need culturally affirming college options.

Join Us

Whether you're an HBCU alumna/us, a parent seeking culturally affirming options for your child, an educator supporting diverse pathways, or someone who believes every student deserves spaces where they can thrive — your support creates change.

For Colorado students growing up as "the only," HBCUs offer the experience of being the majority. Of being seen. Of being home.

Your Colorado Gives Day donation makes that possible.

Mission

Mile High HBCU Weekend, Inc. celebrates the legacy and culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities while building pipelines of access, awareness, and opportunity for Colorado students. Through scholarships, college readiness workshops, and community events, we empower the next generation of Black scholars and leaders to attend HBCUs.

Background Statement

Founded in 2025 by Howard University alumnae Kristina Lance and Naiya Williams, Mile High HBCU Weekend, Inc. addresses a critical gap: Colorado has no local HBCUs, and Black students make up less than 4% of the state's population. For students growing up in predominantly white spaces, HBCUs offer cultural affirmation and environments where they can thrive as the majority, not the minority.

HBCUs have produced 70% of Black doctors, 50% of Black engineers, and 80% of Black judges. They provide more than education — they offer belonging and spaces where Black excellence is the norm.

Our inaugural 2025 Mile High HBCU Weekend brought 300+ alumni and community members together to celebrate the HBCU culture and impact. We've connected with 100+ students at college fairs and are developing comprehensive family resources. Now, we're ready to award our first scholarships and expand our impact across Colorado.
