Food for Our Future-Children and Their Families
“We have moved out of state and love to give where we live by supporting our local communities. But before moving out of Denver, we made a commitment to support Metro Caring. Their unique model of partnering with and empowering the Denver metro residents has local benefits, and our hope is that these solutions can be shared and integrated into other communities around the country. We believe no one should go hungry and access to nourishing foods should not be a privilege. ”
-Rob and Becca Reichenberger, Roots to Rise Society Members
Food for Community
“Metro Caring is a true community – a community of participants, volunteers, staff, and supporters where everyone is welcome and embraced regardless of the role we play, and where we celebrate everyone’s skills, abilities and contributions. We love that Metro Caring builds strength throughout our community in so many ways, including extending food access by growing, harvesting and sharing resources.”
-Katy and Janice, Friends and Metro Caring Volunteers
Food for Single Mothers
“I was [a single mom] for much of my son’s growing up years, and understand the difficulty balancing... working to provide for our family, centering time for family nurture, and planning and cooking nutritious meals. As one of the founding congregations, Central Presbyterian Church enthusiastically supports Metro Caring financially and with volunteer time. We can see the good they do every day when we refer folks who request help and they receive more than they expected.”
-Louise Westfall, Senior Pastor of Central Presbyterian Church

Mission

As one of Colorado’s leading anti-hunger organizations, Metro Caring works with our community to meet people’s immediate need for nutritious, culturally relevant food while building a movement to end hunger at its root.

Background Statement

Founded in 1974 by central Denver churches, Metro Caring has grown into Denver's leading hunger-relief and prevention organization. Forty-two years ago, civic and faith-community leaders came together to address a significant problem. Families, seniors, and other individuals in Denver's core were going hungry. Different groups were responding by providing piecemeal emergency programs but were not coordinating with other agencies. By founding Central Denver Community Services (now Metro Caring), these leaders were able to channel resources of the community through one single location.

Centralization of programs created a better mechanism to leverage volunteers, funds, and in-kind contributions, providing emergency food and other assistance to a larger population. Over the years, the model expanded and new groups started offering support. Additional programs were initiated with the intent to move people out of crisis and toward independence. In 1999, Metro Caring moved to its own facility at 18th Avenue and Downing, an ideal location for both clients and volunteers. This facility eventually proved inadequate to meet the need, and in 2011 Metro Caring began a $5 million campaign to build a new Hunger Relief Center at the same intersection. Metro Caring completed the campaign in March 2014, and construction began in June. In March of 2015, the new Hunger Relief Center at Metro Caring opened for services!
