Background Statement

"Water is fundamental for life and health. The human right to water is indispensable for leading a healthy life in human dignity. It is a prerequisite to the realization of all other human rights."

- The United Nations -

Maji Safi Group (MSG) aspires to fill the gap in health services left by decades of development work. We believe that community health development in rural areas has focused too much on disease treatment, while largely neglecting disease prevention. A treatment-based approach is often expensive and does little to combat the core of many health problems. Consequently, chronic disease has continued for decades because the roots of the problems have not been targeted.

Poor sanitation and hygiene cause millions of deaths each year and are often a direct result of a lack of knowledge on how to prevent disease. Research conducted by a MSG founder in 2011 revealed that 75% of treated drinking water had an unhealthy level of bacteria just 24 hours later. This shows that even if families made the investment to treat their drinking water, they lacked the knowledge on how to properly store their water. This problem leads to a financial loss and the continued use of unsafe drinking water which sustains the burden of disease in the community. This video shows how water is collected for home use in Shirati, Tanzania: http://vimeo.com/71527759.

MSG believes that by engaging communities with fun and interactive lessons on how to prevent disease, participants will have memorable experiences and will be inspired to improve their WASH-related behavioral habits. By providing rural women, children and youth with educational lessons, songs, stories, and skills that can be passed through generations, MSG aspires to empower communities to prevent diseases that would otherwise continue to paralyze development in rural areas.

Maji Safi Group became a nonprofit corporation in Colorado in January 2013 and received 501(c)(3) US nonprofit status in January 2014. In July 2014, MSG registered as a nonprofit LLC in the United Republic of Tanzania.
