The Light House Partners, Inc.

A nonprofit organization

The Light House aims to be the organization that helps children ease their trauma while they deal with the unknowns of their first day in foster care, kinship care, or adoption. When the world is upside down and backward for them, we provide one-on-one contact. No longer will that child be alone trying to figure out what all of this means. They can ask questions, choose their preferred meal, receive the clothes they need, and obtain the toiletries they want and need for their new home. This will give them dignity and a sense of what's next for them. They will see that someone cares about what they are going through and wants to help them be prepared. Instead of a child waiting for placement in a police station or caseworker's office, they can go to a welcoming and comfortable place.

Mission

A warm, inviting home that provides immediate, temporary

housing to limit the traumatic impact to those in the early

stages of fostering, kinship and adoption.

We partner with case workers and local agencies to ease

the challenges of removal by meeting urgent needs such

as new clothing, bedding, food and hygiene products.

All geared to restore dignity to the fostering and adoption

process.

Background Statement

The Light House was established by Elicia Williams who is the current President. She was a foster parent for almost 5 years and adopted her daughter through foster care at the age of 11 through the Collaborative in Arapahoe County. While in foster care, she noticed that the kids didn't have time between moves of foster homes to handle what was going on with them.

Most foster children need the transition time between any activity and the way the system was set up currently, they are not able to go slow because of the volume of children that DHS (Department of Human Services) handles. Foster children do not understand what is happening and are just placed for the new foster parent to handle the emotions that come up with moving. The Light House wants to slow the process down and allow the children to transition and ask questions to understand what is going to happen.
