LID Foundation (Leaders in Development) provides comprehensive mentor-guided support services and wellbeing programs for youth in the foster care system. Our programs are designed to help these underserved young adults lead productive and self-sufficient lives with the support of caring adults who take a personal interest in their long-term success. Our web-based educational programs supplement in-person mentoring to ensure program participants are well-rounded members of the community when the time comes for them to be on their own.
LID Foundation’s mission is to provide underserved young people, especially those aging out of the foster care system, with the tools and support they need to lead fulfilling and successful lives.
Ken Dawson, the Founder and Executive Director of LID Foundation, grew up in Wichita Kansas, where he was one of 13 kids in his family. His late mother, Louise Dawson, despite having a large family herself, always had her door open to kids who needed help and a positive influence in their lives. Inspired by such generosity, Ken sought to continue her legacy by creating a comprehensive program to help those in the community with the greatest need, to get the necessary tools for long-term success.
Driven to make a difference, Ken worked with national experts in the areas of mentorship and wellbeing to develop an innovative program aimed at addressing the specific needs of underserved and foster kids who were within a few years of aging out of the public systems, where they are most vulnerable to taking bad paths. The result is LID Foundation’s unique 6-Facet Wellbeing Program which seeks to guide participants through a structured series of lessons aimed at supporting all the key elements of being a whole “well-rounded” person. Modules include education in the critical areas of body, mind, spirit, finance, occupation, and social interactions. Supported by mentors throughout the journey, participants in the LID program emerge ready to thrive in the world.
LID Foundation seeks to positively benefit the maximum number of adults possible, as the need is so great. We appreciate the generosity of our wonderful supporters. Current initiatives include enhancements to the eLearning website, increasing enrollment, and funding additional staff to support program growth. We are currently seeking passionate mentors and financial supporters to help make an impact.
