Background Statement
The vision for Levitt Pavilion Denver emerged in the master plan for Ruby Hill Park, a previously underutilized 80-acre green space on the city's southwest side. When the plan was developed in the early 2000s, the surrounding communities expressed a desire for the investments to include 1) a public amphitheater to take advantage of the park's natural bowl and expansive lawn and 2) programming that would bring engaging, family-friendly activity to the park in a safe and accessible setting. In 2009, DPR Director of Planning Gordon Robertson and Councilman Chris Nevitt reached out to the national Levitt Foundation, a leader in the creative placemaking movement, to propose that Ruby Hill Park was the perfect location for the newest Levitt Pavilion.
Over the next several years, a group of City stakeholders and the Levitt Foundation embarked on a unique public-private partnership, establishing Friends of Levitt Pavilion Denver as an independent 501(c)(3) in 2013. Following the initial building campaign, construction began on the 6,500-capacity outdoor venue, and Levitt presented its inaugural season in 2017.
