League of Women Voters of Chaffee County

A nonprofit organization

We are about educating residents about important issues and encouraging people to vote.

Mission

Our mission is to Empower Voters and Defend Democracy. We believe in the power of individuals to create a more perfect democracy. We encourage the informed and active participation of citizens in government and to influence public policy through education and advocacy.

Background Statement

In 1975 a small group of women from Salida and Buena Vista started the League of Women Voters of Chaffee County. We have grown to the 3rd largest league in Colorado and have well over 125 members, men and women. This includes four members who have belonged for over 50 years.

The LWV was founded in the US in 1920 around the passage of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote. The choice made in 1920 to neither support nor oppose any political party or candidate for public office continues today to ensure that the League’s voice is heard above the turmoil of party politics. However, after careful study, the LWV will advocate for or against policies that are contrary to our positions.
