Testimonials

I'm a KRFC fan from Florida, though I used to live in Fort Collins. There's just something special about this station that helps me stave off that homesick feeling I get for the Colorado Front Range. I love that I can listen to KRFC from across the country online--even on my iPhone--and just have to say thanks for helping me transition to a digital Internet listener after I moved.

There are many benefits to riding a bike. But if you catch me driving around town, I'm listening to KRFC.

Having lived in Fort Collins for the past 17 years, I was thrilled to have been interviewed for KRFC's "Support Local Culture" program. Its recognition of the Arts as an integral part of our lively community makes this program a perfect example of collaboration and community. KRFC is well known as a promoter of our region's musical talent and now, through "Support Local Culture", the visual and performing arts as well. The radio interviews and supplementary website profiles have led to increased awareness of the breadth of talent in our city. I am proud to have been part of "Support Local Culture" and its promotion of and dedication to Fort Collins' artists.

KRFC has been instrumental in helping SpokesBUZZ Fort Collins in our mission to amplify our local music scene, develop our local artists and promote Fort Collins as a progressive cultural destination. Our partnership with KRFC has resulted in SpokesBUZZ bands performing on air via Live at Lunch, assistance with promotion of our nonprofit's programs with national impact (such as BandSwap and our annual Colorado South by Southwest showcase in Austin), consistent and comprehensive coverage of the Colorado music scene, and of course, local music being played on air and online, which helps foster our community's culture and share our town's tremendous talent with the world. We are also so appreciative of the effort and excellence KRFC exemplifies. Long live local radio!

I work as a cabdriver in Loveland and have the radio tuned to 88.9 for a good part of my shift. The variety of music they play is amazing. I especially like that DJs have two-hour stints as this allows for an even wider variety of music. And there are no annoying commercials! My work day wouldn't be the same without KRFC. I recently became a sustaining member because I love the great music coming over the airwaves. Keep it up, KRFC FM!!!

Listening to KRFC is like being invited over by friends to share their unique music collections. You hear things you know but you're always hearing something new that you like and wouldn't have heard otherwise.

As a Professor of Community Arts, I appreciate the "Support Local Culture" program as an innovative way to support a creative community within the Fort Collins area. This program helps introduce Artists to the community as neighbors and friends. It opens up a dialogue for collaboration and support. This program is unique and uses 'Community Radio' as a catalyst for community building on a large scale, not only through music but through all Artistic endeavors.

Thank you Michelle and KRFC!

Working as a volunteer programmer at KRFC has been a great experience. My show, Rhythms of Youth, gives young musicians a creative space in which to to be heard and respected, which are the most important things you can give to them.

I'm a stay at home mom and smart people on the radio keep my head from exploding.

Background Statement

After ten years of planning and fundraising, KRFC 88.9 Radio sent out our first sound waves on March 1, 2003. However, the story really started more than two decades ago, when dedicated and passionate community members pulled together to create a radio station that speaks to Northern Colorado.

Public Radio for the Front Range (PRFR) was started by a group of former DJs from KCSU-FM. DJs who were not students left KCSU to start their own frequency when Colorado State University decided to make KCSU-FM solely student-run. In September 1995, PRFR was given IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit status.

By the summer of 1996, PRFR had applied for a construction permit for 88.9 MHz, only to be challenged by several broadcasting groups. In 1997, PRFR went into negotiations to share 88.9 MHz. These negotiations failed, and in the spring of 1998, PRFR applied for 89.7 MHz. In 2000, the group applied for a frequency in the low-power jurisdiction. However, another group applied for the same frequency, leading to delay. Finally, after successful negotiations, PRFR came into agreement with the other applicants that they would receive 88.9 MHz. The agreement was submitted to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on July 7, 2002, the FCC granted PRFR a construction permit for a 3,000 watt, non-commercial radio station. KRFC began broadcasting on March 1, 2003.

We've evolved a lot since that then, but one thing hasn't changed - KRFC 88.9 FM Radio is committed to making great radio that is local, non-commercial and volunteer-powered. There aren't many radio stations that can make that claim. We tell stories through music and ideas not found on main-stream media to thousands of listeners/members - delivered by volunteers who give of their time because they love what they do and they love the station.

Now in what has been deemed our "post-modern" phase by current Board of Directors and staff, KRFC 88.9 FM Radio Fort Collins is aimed at providing a platform for the voice of Northern Colorado to be heard. With our new offices and studios, located at the Music District, the station is focusing on letting the community come and tell more of their stories and connect their events, passions, and creativity to the larger community. With things like live-streaming events, broadcasting remotely from anywhere in Northern Colorado, and building a robust podcast and streaming music service, KRFC 88.9 FM Radio aims to be a resource for both entertainment and education in the front range.

The continued support of our community not only strengthens this community radio station - it ensures that KRFC 88.9 FM Radio Fort Collins will continue to be the voice of our community and the soundtrack of Northern Colorado.
