About the DeAngelis Center:

The Frank DeAngelis Center for Community Safety was created to support law enforcement and school safety training and tactics for mass casualty tragedies. As the District of Columbine High School and Deer Creek Middle School, Jeffco Schools knows firsthand the importance of preparedness and response to critical events. The Center is a place where law enforcement and school safety officials can have the difficult conversations, test tactics, share lessons learned; both failures and successes. It is the opportunity for realistic training in a school environment.

The DeAngelis Center, for more than 50 years, was Martensen elementary school in Wheat Ridge Colorado; a place of education for thousands of students. Renamed the Frank DeAngelis Center for Community Safety for our retired Columbine High School Principal in April of 2017, the DeAngelis Center is still a place of education; the students of today are first responders that include law enforcement and fire departments, school safety and victim advocates. From patrol and K9 to school resource officers and SWAT, Bomb squads and rescue task force members and crime scene investigators all train at the Center.

In March of 2019, the DeAngelis Center introduced state of the art video, audio, scent and interactive active shooter simulator technology designed to enhance the realistic training experience.

Mission

Supporting school and community safety through evidence-based training focused on prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery while maintaining a positive climate and culture.

Guiding principles:

We believe prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery are the most important steps in achieving more favorable outcomes for school and community safety. As a result, we are committed to providing state-of-the-art training for all aspects of school and community safety.

Budget constraints should never present a barrier to receiving comprehensive instruction in best safety and security practices; therefore, we provide our programs and support free of charge or low cost to the best of our ability. To do so, we are structured as a 501(c)(3) non-profit and are reliant upon the receipt of grants and donations.

Background Statement

The Jeffco DeAngelis Foundation is a non-profit designed to enhance school and community safety through robust instruction in the consistent application of best practices in school safety and security. The Foundation has collaborated with Jefferson County Public Schools to create the Frank DeAngelis Center for Community Safety, which was formerly an elementary school. Law enforcement, first responders, and school personnel train at the Center under real-world conditions, which include the sights and sounds of active shooter scenarios. This type of real-world training option, within a school structure, is invaluable and one of a kind.
