Testimonials

The hardest part of travel is not surviving the stress of airports or adapting to new environments. It is not learning a new language or eating new food. In my opinion, the hardest part lies in the goodbyes. As we said our goodbyes to everyone at KACH, I had time to reflect on all I have learned from the people I met.

From Catherine, John, and everyone else at the farm, I learned the value of hard work and appreciation. From the friends I met at the New Generation Leadership Conference, I learned that change is possible and attainable with the correct efforts. From David, I learned how to live a life I am proud of. From Dr. Karambu, I learned the endless possibilities of a determined mind. From the children at KACH, I learned the true power of a smile.

I've learned many lessons during our trip, but perhaps most importantly, I have learned a lot about who I am, who I want to be, and all that I could possibly become. However, this conclusion may not have been reached at this time without crossing paths with several amazing people throughout my journey. It is a special gift that after such a short amount of time, I built relationships with so many bright and loving souls.

We spent our final hours with the children at KACH, and only then did I realize how many hugs I'd miss giving, songs I'd miss singing, laughter I'd miss hearing, and smiles I'd miss seeing. While the goodbyes were hard, Dr. Karambu said they are necessary in order to be able to greet one another in the future. We must say goodbye and leave so we can come back another time. So, with that, "kwaheri tuonene tena" - goodbye so we may meet again.

Mission

The mission of International Peace Initiatives is to promote cultures of peace by supporting sustainable initiatives that improve livelihoods and enhance quality of life.

Background Statement

IPI's Amani Children's Home was first built in Meru in 2009 with the intention of having the children remain in their own community, with access to their current school, old family friends, and the town and church they knew before losing a family. In contrast, the standard model is for the Kenyan government to institutionalize orphans far from their home. The elders who influenced IPI want to provide roots and to offer as little disruption to the child's life as possible. Community is key to IPI.
