If you know a child that has difficulty learning in school, you recognize that sitting in a desk simply does not work for all kids. Our theater programs help all students, particularly non-traditional and kinesthetic learners, by getting them out of their desks and to learn "hands-on". In addition, we train teachers in these techniques so our program can benefit kids for years to come.
You can help children like this gain confidence in themselves through your support of our programs.
At the beginning of a recent arts education partnership project at a school in Wheatridge, one girl was terrified to stand up in front of her class. At the end of the project, she wrote:
"I could never, like ever, read in front of anyone and now that I have more confidence in myself, I can! I am not very shy anymore I can do more things in front of people. This was the best school project ever."
Imagination Makers uses the artistry, technique and discipline of theater to engage children and teens in the deep learning of grade-level curriculum and the 21st-century learning skills--creativity, communication and collaboration. We train educators to master these dynamic skills, enhancing student performance on an ongoing basis.
Founded in 1980, Imagination Makers (IM) began by providing live theater for children. For 34 years, the company did performances of original plays created for young people, performed by professional adult actors and musicians, and toured to schools, reaching over 1 million children. IM won the 2014 Henry Award for Excellence in Educational Theater from the Colorado Theatre Guild and multiple years of NEA grant support for our performances.
In 1983, IM began its education program and since then has conducted 51 theater residencies and partnerships. In May 2014, we discontinued our performance program to focus on arts education programming, currently in six partner schools. With an emphasis on college and career readiness, theater is an effective way for students to practice the 21st century learning skills that will ensure their future success. IM's rigorous approach provides multiple opportunities for students' creative expression and content acquisition through theater. This job-embedded professional development supports teachers as they become proficient in using these powerful methods, positively impacting their future students for years to come.
