Background Statement
⸻
The Humane Society of Fremont County is an independent, non-profit, open-admission animal shelter serving Fremont and Custer counties, including Cañon City, Florence, Coal Creek, Westcliffe, and Silver Cliff. We are not part of the Fremont County government or the City of Cañon City, nor do we receive funding from the Humane Society of the United States. We are a 501(c)(3) organization governed by a local board of directors.
We provide a wide range of services, including adoptions, stray animal turn-ins (pickup handled by each municipality), owner surrenders, reclaims, low-cost microchipping and vaccines (excluding rabies), lost pet support, volunteer and foster opportunities, pet supply sales, Adopt-a-Cage sponsorships, animal cremation, and a free community pet food program (eligibility required).
Since late 2014, we’ve operated as a “No-Kill” shelter while remaining open-admission, achieving Colorado’s highest save rate among open-admission shelters for ten straight years. In 2017, we received the National Henry Bergh Award, recognizing us as one of the two best shelters in the country. That same year, the Colorado State Senate honored us with a proclamation for our role in making Fremont County Colorado’s only “No-Kill” community. Since late 2014, we have maintained a “No-Kill” policy as an open-admission animal shelter. Our shelter has held Colorado's highest open-admission shelter save rate for ten consecutive years. And in 2017, we received the National Henry Bergh Award, which honored us as one of the two best animal shelters in the nation.
