Howlin' Dog Music Group

A nonprofit organization

Howlin' Dog Music Group (HDMG) helps music artists thrive amid continuing changes in the business.

Industry changes make it hard, if not impossible, for artists to make a living and release music. CD sales once funded recordings, but those days are gone. But recording music allows artists to book gigs, promote their shows, and attract new audiences.

Here’s the reality: there are few incentives for independent artists to invest in recorded music now. Live shows can be a viable path in some areas, but recordings bring more opportunities. Streaming payments are negligible, vinyl is a niche market, and CDs are harder to use every year‍. Why spend $10,000 or more on a recording with no return?‍ Artists and fans need excellent recordings, but they cost a lot.

HDMG helps:

  • Fund high-quality recordings projects
  • Build a community of artists and fans
  • Get more great music out into the world‍

We want to live in communities with vibrant live and recorded music all around us. Troubadours will always exist because it's their calling. Let's support them.

Mission

Mobilizing collective action to find new and sustainable ways of supporting the music we love

Background Statement

It is the purpose of HDMG to support current performing singer-songwriters, encourage emerging singer-songwriters, honor legacy artists, preserve the history of regional music, and spread acoustic music to both old and new audiences through recordings, educational workshops, events, and partnering with other music-centered non-profit organizations.
